Its time once again to see who has found the latest and greatest exterior finish. We do alot of exterior doors and have to finish them from time to time. We have gone from ML Campbell euro to sikkens do to homeowner maintenance problems. I guess im still looking for that miracle finish we all hope for. What have you guys had success with ?

Sikkens exterior side, lacquer interior side. Sprayed Sikkens.

For 20 years now, with no complaints. We have seen several formulations of Sikkens as they change things.

Look up "Ten Years After" in the Woodweb Project gallery for pics of 10 yr old doors and info.

Might want to look at ICA coatings and their waterborne lacquers.

Has anyone ever used ZAR exterior water based oil modified polyurethane? SWP rep recommended it. I was planning on trying it, but would like to know if anyone has experience with it.

I would use ModernMasters MasterClear before the Zar WB product. Used both and prefer the ModernMasters and it did better when we tested it outside.

Sikkens ten years ago was a 'good' coating.
Sikkens of today will fail within two years.

I have switched to Epifanes Boat Varnish for most exterior door coating.

Most clients will not pay for 2K poly.

No miracle finishes I know of. Unless you do as the Japanese and use no finish.
We have been using the Euro water base door and window finishes for about 8 years now. Many brands, a few available here. Milesi, Sirca, ICA, Zobel and probably a few others. Milesi is far from being the most popular in Europe. They all are pretty similar and the main thing is to pick a company with good support. One difference is most of the Italian water base use one coat of impregnator and get the color there. Austria and Germany products seem to prefer 2 coats of impregnator, one clear with heavy sanding after then the color coat. Followed by sealer then topcoat.

We used Sikkins for years and agree with Robert about that. Many problems with that finish. Lacquer inside is not a good idea if the door has any glass. The finish on the glass beads will fail in less than a year if the sun hits them.

There are some downsides - a steep learning curve and the need for some special equipment to apply the water base. It is harder to touch up than Sikkins but recoating when the finish wears is easier.

The impregnator can be applied heavy with a sponge for low production. For doors we shower it on over our dip tank with a showerhead connected to a small airless. We dip all frames that will fit in the dip tank. Hi production calls for a flow coater and hang line.

For the sealer and top coat a PPS gun or pressure pot works for low production. The best is a 20 to one or more AAA. The finish can be brushed for touching up but tricky.
All sides of the product need to be coated at the same time so hanging vertical works best. We did use a horizontal rotating unit for a while. Machining and sanding technic is a little different also.

With all this and the learning curve it may not be the best for just a few doors.

Many these companies mentioned make what they call a wax effect finish. It is simple to use and must be recoated each year. It is a close to the wood finish and great for customers that do not like the look of film finishes.
The last picture shows a Euro shop with lift table for the sprayer an a hang line. Typical of how they do this in Europe.

Again, it appears Mother Nature is winning this battle.

I just heard tonite from my finisher that PPG has acquired all of Akzo Nobel, including Sikkens.

So.....is this good, bad or unknown for those of us using Sikkens?

Jeff,
Mother nature has the best finish for outdoors. It takes a long time to produce but requires no maintenance and just gets better with age.
Cladding and building with barn wood is not easy but makes for a great finish.

Dave,
One good thing that could come from that would be if Sikkins brings their water base finishes over here. They have a good line with all the caulking and end grain sealers.
They have to get approval from the FDA or something like that to bring the new finishes in. The cost of this has kept some of the better water base products like Adler and Remmers from selling here.

I do alot of formal mahogany doors,I use ICA ext. 2k. it amazing that someone hasn't come up with ext finish that lasts. It all depends on how many hours sun exposure, no sun you can get 10 yrs, heavy sun 2 to 3 yrs. Have tested sikkens, its good for maintenance but if you have alot of panels sikkens won't provide a good film build to seal out water and won't last more then 2 years in heavy sun. If anyone has tested multiple 2k polys I would love to hear results

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).

The staff of WOODWEB assume no responsibility for the accuracy, content, or outcome of any posting transmitted at WOODWEB's Message Boards.
