when I want to keep water from penetrating into wood l apply a coat of Smith's clear penetrating epoxy sealer. Stuff works great.
Any high quality epoxy resin with a viscosity the same or lower than West System will penetrate enough to provide a complete barrier to water. You do not need to thin it. Encapsulating the wood is most important.
