Large Volume sanding "equipment" advice?

I have received a large contract of a years duration refinishing a number of tables with flat high gloss tops.

Have been using random orbit sanders with fine grits up to 1000 and finishing by hand. I find my surfprep too slow....

Looking for some advice about a sander I have never used. The air driven sturh dual pad sander that has 2 sanding pads that are 4 &1/2" X 11" each. So a large reciprocating whole sheet of paper sander. It apears to be ideal for my job??

Just looking for advice from others who have used them?? I would love to try them out before I buy...... but can't find any locally.

I have greatly benifited from your previous posts as you have so openly shared from your experience. So just a chance to say thank you!

This is all furniture that we are touching up and refinishing. So unfortunately none of it would pass through a wide belt.

I know I stated tables because it is the tops that are the issue. But each room has 6 or 7 types of furniture. Dark wood, high gloss. We will receive about 70 peices of furniture a day for a.year. So best methods is the search we are on......

We are not buffing these, so it is an off the gun finish. But we do need to eliminate our own sanding scratches. We are using 600 & 1000 grit. Going to purchase and try some foam backed RO velcro pads.

That's too bad Jim, it would make it easier that way. We used to have a 10"orbital sander that did pretty quick work on conference tables. Maybe that would work, we also used to use Stuhr straight line sanders with the 2 pads and they were pretty good also. I hope you come up with something that works for you.

If you are interested I think I still have 2 of the sanders you are talking about from years ago. They came with some other sanders I purchased at an auction and I've never used them other than to test that they work ok. I'm not sure on brand but very hd. and in good shape. I'd sell them pretty cheap if you're interested. I can see if I have any photos to post.

Jim, there are a few options:
1) Have you replaced the backup pads on your sanders lately? Tried a softer pad?
2) 6", 8", and 11" random orbital sanders. Dynabrade has the 6" & 8" covered well. 11" is supplied by Gem primarily for the corain industry. I have several customers using these on wood.
3) Review the sandpaper you are using to ensure you are not putting is stray scratches from inconsistent sanding discs. You really do get what you pay for and higher quality sanding discs eliminate those stray marks.
4) Foam sanding discs are a great option for 500 grit and above. I stock the two industry leaders for these. You still need to eliminate the coarse scratches though. Start with a higher grit but spend a little more time on it.
5) Have you tried mesh abrasives with dust extraction? Pulling all of the dust out gives a better and more consistent finish. I have small trial packs available.
