Sealer under 2k Poly

I have a large walnut island top coming up with an undermount sink. The finish will be chemcrafts verde chiaro 2k poly. I have used this before on tops, with its own sealer, and although never had a problem, I am looking for a little more piece of mind around the sink. Does polyester sealer offer any more moisture resistance or flexiblity than 2k poly? I am also considering smiths cpes, but have never used it and am not sure about compatibility with 2k poly. Any input would be much appreciated.

Polyester sealer will afford better protection than 2PK sealer, though not better flexibility.
And polyester sealer is the way to go - no question. Make sure you fully seal the bottom for balance and at least one top coat of 2PK on the bottom as well. This will give you good balance; and if the walnut is properly dried, laid up - i.e. proper glue and board grain direction sequentially flipped, you should have good stability. Chemcraft sells a good polyester sealer - greenish tint which is fine for the walnut. Start off with thinner coatings and progress to higher solids for the final coatings to achieve grain fill. You can do this in one pull for each face. Prepare separate batches - say 1/2 gallon each. One blended with catalyst, the other with accelerator. Mix together and reduce as you go. You extend your 20 minute window into an hour plus. Speak to your rep as he/she will know.

Thanks. I spoke with my rep today and he felt the polyester might be too brittle in this application, ie around the edge of the sink that might get dented. He felt the d-dur exterior would provide the most flexibilty and water resistance. I tend to agree, but would like to see a sample to make sure it has as nice a look/feel as the verde. It self seals and I will use cpes around the sink(pending adhesion tests).

I have used polyester many times with undermounts with nary an issue. Maintenance by the homeowner is most important. That said, D-Dur is an excellent product. Use it's sealer and then the topcoat - I've used it a few times high traffic bars and tables as well for exterior projects for which it was designed.

Thanks, great info. I'm wondering if the d-dur has the same chemical and scratch resistance that the chiaro does? Mainly thinking about cleaners, vinegars, etc. Since its not an interior product, does it still have to meet kcma tests?

I don't have any experience with polyester but I do use chemcraft's verde sealer and chairo. I've had pretty good luck with it on island tops, not any call backs. My distributer carries Mohawk products as well and they have a new 2k poly that is brushable or by sponge roller or can be reduced and sprayed. To my understanding it will lay down and the brush and roller stripes disappear. I've not used it but it sounds more like a thin version of an epoxy finish.
