Cabinets too red... need to go more brown?

hi.. I am finishing a stain grade maple kitchen that I built.. I cut a SW stain with clear stain base to ease the end grain blotching.. Stain had some reds in it.. I then used a toner with the same stain by including 3 oz with 3 parts lac thinner and 1 part vinyl sealer... This provided an even color which ended up too red.. So I added 5 oz of brown dye to 3 parts lac thinner and 1 part cat. lac..

The brown helped tone down the red but it is still too red..

Question: What can I do at this point to turn the wood more brown? The dye stain toner causes the wood to look different under different lights..

I have a few steps left of van dyke brown glaze and topcoat..

ANY experienced advice would be GREATLY appreciated.. Thanks..

Buy a color wheel and study color. Green is needed to kill red. But after all the layers and product you have on there now, I have no idea how to proceed. I do know you it would have been easier if you practiced and developed a color schedule on a flat board.

scuff sand.... mix 1/2 oz of Mohawk green NGR with 28 oz. of acetone and tone evenly every surface of your topcoated parts and lock it in with another topcoat....... except... Do the schedule you developed on a flat panel of same material up to where you are.... then tone that panel with green to see how much to tone with... be very careful green is very strong and you will not see its effects till you wet it with topcoat... once you've done it a million times you know what to do but a first timer it takes baby steps.... Like the post above.. step sample step samples step samples.... they pay off in the long run to stop a minute and prepare for your end result or pretty dang close to it...

Craig, You may already know this but there are two things I pound into my students of the wood finishing classes I teach.
1. When working a color error to the light side of the color as it is always easy to make it darker.
2. error to less red, very easy to add more red at any time.
Another thing to know, what colors make brown? Red-Yellow-Black Once you understand this you will know how to alter your browns as needed.
Yes, green will kill red very fast, and like Shane says go slow, as to much will give it a very bad look.
Since you have to glaze yet with VDB glaze and this also can add a little more red try adding a little black to the VDB to help mellow the red in it.
Of course you can only do this if the end result (color) will still be ok.

Thank you for your responses..

Lessons learned.. Stain SW mixed started out too red.. I mistakenly believed I could remove red with brown dye stain as toner.. With the knowledge that the owner didn't want any reds... I should have started with a more brown stain.. I admittedly made this too complicated..

At this point.. I glazed and am hopeful the owner will accept them.. If not.. do any of you have any experiences where a large kitchen or project had to be refinished? If so.. How did you handle it? Your thoughts are needed.. A little discouraged at this point.. Thanks in advance.

After some tweaking here is the finish product.. can you say panic?? Closer to what they were looking for... Thanks for advice guys..
