Disposing of chemical waste5/25
I'm relocating my shop into a municipality that wants me to note how I'm gojng to dispose of chemicals. My current situation doesn't require me to do that
Im in Chicagoland. Anyone in Chicago have the same situation and who do you do it through? Do they supply a 55 gal drum? What does ir typically cost to remove?

you can get drums from safety kleen but they are expensive.
id assume plastic with chemicals against metal never being a good idea
We are up in Canada but also have this requirement. Its pretty simple. You need to get in touch with a chemical waste company and they will set you up. We use a company called Maratek.
They drop a 55gallon drum off at our place, when full, we call them and they come swap out the drum. Costs about $300 per drum to dispose of.
Just keep a copy of the manifest when they come pick it up and you then have record that it was disposed of properly.
We also have to have our company registered with the ministry of the environment (government). A copy of the manifest gets sent to them with every pick up. You may or may not need to be registered with your local, state, or federal agency.
Solvent recycling unit?
We looked into a solvent recycler. They can be had for a few grand so it was a very good option. The problem is they create a solid hockey puck of sludge that still needs to be disposed of. Your municipality may allow you to put it in the trash, but I would confirm before you go and buy one.
When we looked onto it, we found that the cost of disposing the solid pucks was about the same as a drum.
The chemical disposal companies take your liquid waste, recycle it and create new solvents to resell. The hockey pucks they end up with is what you are paying for in the drum you give them.
The other issue with the solvent recycler is you will create more gunwash than you know what to do with, and then what do you do with the extra....pay to get rid of it?
safety kleen had me provide them with the product data sheets of everything i dispose of.
I had a customer of mine that would take waste, put it in a 5 gallon pail and take a air hose with a metal pipe attached and put the pipe into the pail. Then would turn on the air at a very low pressure to create bubbles to help the waste evaporate. They also had a lid with many holes in it to cover. Most times it would take about a week to get it down to about 2 gallons of sludge. I'm sure it depended on what the ratio was of the waste but that seemed to help with the gallons being sent to reclaim. Now of course this will elevate your VOC/emissions and I don't know if it's legal to do or not. I'm betting it isn't.
Years ago, I inquired about the various laws/rules governing the disposal of hazardous waste. I asked for an inspector from the Air Quality Control District to stop by my shop for an evaluation. Expecting to get a binder full of paperwork outlining the Laws and the fees and fines that would accumulate if I didn't adhere to the rules, I was shocked when the inspector told me that since I didn't generate very much waste ( about 7/10 gallons a Month ),to just put what I had on the roof of the building and let it evaporate.
