what is anybody's go to product for white satin finish? I don't do a ton of finishing but up until now most of my finishing has been stain and sherwin williams cv.
About five years ago i did a small project with general finishes WB white. If you rubbed something metal on it it would leave a mark.

My local sherwin williams is mostly a paint store and the guy working there doesn't know much about cv.
if i use WB do i need to do a clear over it?

thanks...................nicko

Best I have ever used is chrmcraft pladsticolor. Has a great feel, consistent sheen, very easy to spray, does well in vertical application, and wears like iron. I've yet to have a negative customer review on the product. I prefer to spray it opposed to stealth, or the valspar CV.

l use both the Kem-Var F3 pigmented CV and the Kem-Aqua pigmented WB lacquer. l too only have a SW paint division store to buy from but with a week or two advance notice they can get the product for me. I do have to drive 30 miles if l need the CV tinted as it needs 844 tints which my SW store does not carry.

Yes, adding a clear coat will get rid of, or at least reduce, the effect you speak of, which is called "coining". The downside of clear coating is that it may result in a color shift, so you need to choose a clear that is really clear.

Cheers,
Pat

my local Sherwin Williams store says they have a white catalyzed lacquer. Has any one used it? They are checking to see if they can get me white CV.

I dont use SW products, but I am 100% certain they have what I am about to recommend, I just dont know what they call it........

Since you are already spraying clear SW conversion varnish, just get some white conversion varnish and have them tint it to whatever colour you need.

Spray a coat of primer (must be compatible with the CV), scuff, then spray a coat of tinted CV, and done.

A quick google search brought up SW Kemvar Plus. Read the spec sheet and it should tell you what primer to use.

Yes.. SW Kemvar Plus is the CV u want.
And the primer would be Kemvar Plus Surfacer (E63W50)

Kevin, is that something that Sherwin Williams can tint in the store? Like i said my local SW is just a paint store but they do sell Kem Var water white cv which is what i usually spray. I guess i can go there and talk to them.

thanks...........nicko

For the last 6 months I’ve been using Mohawks ez-vinyl primer and their white flow cv. I love it, it’s the easiest and the best I’ve used so far. I’ve had several pails tinged as well. Quick dry times too.

thanks for the response Mike. I contacted Mohawk and they sent me some info and advice on how best to spray it.

thanks...............nicko

I think you’ll like it nicko, they say it doesn’t need thinned to spray but I use their reducer with it. Just makes it lay down better with a more even coat. I’d say 8-10% on the clear and 10-15% on the pigments. 15 minute sweat in and has an 8 hour pot life.

Mike
what do you mean by 15 minute sweat it?

If you use the right product, you should not have to top coat it, The best I've used is Becker Acroma.

Using white over that is a good idea. I've even gone as far as powder coating materials and surfaces that are somewhat more difficult to work with. We had a smoker in our backyard with a outdoor oak bar bar which I absolutely loved. We had a clear coat applied to the surface for a smooth and sleek appearance.

Nicko, when you mix the catylist in you have to give it 15 minutes for the chemicals to react and do their thing. Then stir again and ready to spray.

Nicko, Ask your store to put you in touch with a SW Product Finishes rep or search for your closest PF store location. We have nearly all of our product shipped in from a Product Finishes store. The local retail/commercial SW locations are really limited on depth of product offerings and knowledge.

We love BeckerAcroma products and SW owns them. For Pigmented CV we use KemVar 8420 (H66W80146). I think this cross references to Beckers Matador. This is a great product IMO.

Also look at the primer/surfacer KemVar 5411S (E63W50001) Also known as Beckers UniSurfacer. We also use KemVar 9230S - V84F90041 (20 Degree - known as Amerivar from Becker) for our topcoats. All of these use the same catalyst too.

jason balm would you say sherwin's pigmented kemvar plus is the same product as matador?

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
