Best spray equipment for waterborne.

Like so many other companies, we are looking to move from solvent to waterborne and am looking for the best equipment to switch to. I understand it must be stainless and not create micro-bubbles.
We spray both paint colors(10 degree lacquer) and clear lacquers(20 degree). Stains would be used in gravity style spray guns.
I also want a system that is easy to change over different paint colors.
We currently use Kremlin pumps and guns(both 10-1 and 15-1) We do have good results when we do spray water with the 15-. We do get some micro-bubbles but a nice spray.
I have heard that the diaphragm pump set up is the way to go. Which ones?
Also I would like thoughts on spray guns for water, both connected to a system and gravity type.
Thanks

I'm one who prefers either a diaphragm pump/gun or a pot/gun set-up for WB's.
I use a Wagner Colora Zip 52 diaphragm pump set-up with a Sata 1000K 1.3 RP for spraying WB pigmented; simple, trouble free set-up that sprays WB's flawlessly (the key to using a diaphragm pump for fine finishing is having a stainless steel fluid regulator on the pump, this will eliminate any fluid pulsation). Also, diaphragm pump fluid lines don't clean-up as quick as a piston pump (lower fluid pressure?)
For spraying WB clear I use a Devilbiss stainless steel pot mated to a Sata 1000K 1.1 RP. Once again I get flawless results with this set-up.
For small jobs, I do have a couple of Devilbiss Compact gravity guns I use wiith WB's. For the clear I'll use either a 1.2 or 1.4 & 510 aircap, for the pigmented either a 1.4 or 1.8 & 510 aircap ( I have to thin the finish to get it through a 1.4 but I prefer the results when compared to the 1.8).
One more thing; For my WB finishing I've been using SW's Kem Aqua Plus clear and pigment, both of these products prefer thin coats, the product you use may require different needle/nozzle set-ups.

Q1 - interesting you prefer diaphragm !!....Why over a AAA ?!
Have you ever made a comparison with the same lacquer base?!
I was once suggest to use a diaphragm pump by an European lacquer producer for some advantages over AAA.....!!

AND.....last but not as....relevant !.....why wagner and not ....say binks !?
Thks

To Robert;
first off some background; I own a 1 man custom finish shop in a smallish (pop. 30,000+/-) but prosperous town so I do it all; cabinets, furniture, trim doors, art pieces...new, refinish... homes, business, public works, industrial...2k poly, CV, WB, oil, house paint...glaze, distress, cut/polish tone/shade, match existing, make stain to match, hand rubbed...in the booth and on-site...no doubt just like a lot of others on here. I've been at this for over 40 years!, 63 this year and going strong. So far this year I have sprayed about 200 gallons WB finish (mostly Kem Aqua but also some Target and Valspar) and 250 gallons of solvent borne finish (mostly Kem-Var F-3 but also MLC 2k poly and Rudd Prothane.
Since I do all manner of finishing I own a lot of tools: airless, AAA's, pots, diaphragm pump, turbine, gravity guns, pressure cups and lots of spray guns; (3)Accuspray, (6)Binks, (4)CAT, (6)Devilbiss, (1) Dux, (4) Graco, (1)Krautzberger, (8) Sata...I like spray guns!
Binks are fine guns, I'd be happy using one all day every day and often do as my AAA's are set-up with 1500's but when it comes to a full air spray gun I like the Satas better and since I have them I find I use them almost exclusively when spraying with a low pressure set-up.
Yes, I have sprayed lots of WB's with a pump (many 100's of gallons) and I have found I prefer the lower pressure set-up as I get better results with less drama, simple as that.
I use the wagner colara zip 52 because i saw it on e-bay for $50.00. It wasn't working but I took a chance on it and after 2 hours of cleaning and a $400.00 stainless steel fluid regulator I got a $1,500.00+ pump for $450.00. the thing works great!

I use a CAT Jaguar Gravity 1.4.
And, a Kremlin 10-14 with their Waterborne tip for large on site work for wall panels, doors, etc. ICA and Valspar Zenith coatings.

FWIW - We spray just water based stuff & reasonable quantity (several hundred gallons a year). We use diaphragm pumps and have had great results - takes some fine tuning like everything else but overall really nice. Started out with one from Homestead Finishing

http://homesteadfinishingproducts.com/qualspray-pumps/

used all day for the last five years with no issues. We just recently added the Wagner Colora Zip 52 as a second setup and it seems great also. Very similar pumps.

are any of you using the diaphragm pumps for WB primers and color coats or just clears? If so how is the finish quality? It seems like you would get a flatter finish with an AAA

I guess the first question I would ask is how much finishing do you do in a year? and how big of projects do you do at a time.
Reason I am asking this question is because I am wondering how much material are you using at a time. I have aaa pumps, pressure pots, sata gravity fed guns and airless pumps. If you are going to spray quite a bit of material a Kremlin Reason 30:1 pump is the best there is for applying water based material, if you only spray small small amounts at a time I would look at a sata gun

Are the Sata guns really that much better at atomizing WBs than other top brands of guns? Also would you run it with a pressure pot or a diaphragm pump? I probably spray the equivalent of one average size kitchen per month. When doing colors I probably spray 2 gallons at a time as an average. I use a pressure pot for clears and I have been using an airless for primer and colors.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
