White conversion varnish

I am making the transition from precat lacquer to cv. I have a white kitchen which will be my first project with it. I have been using Sherwin Williams products and it sounds like the white pigmented kemvar plus is the product they have for this. I would greatly appreciate any thoughts and advice on spraying this. Seal with a vinyl sealer first or thin this product and spray a seal coat? Thanks in advance.

You will like the switch from precat. Basically sprays out exactly the same so the learning curve is very short.

You will want the compatible primer they sell for it. Check the spec sheets and it will list the primer to use. One coat of primer followed by one coat of CV will do it. Add a second coat of CV if it makes you feel better.

Here is what I found from the data sheet

I've been spraying SW CV for about 10 years. You can "self seal" using the CV, but it's not the easiest to sand.

My process:

sand to 120 grit
spray Kemvar plus surfacer (catalyze, then thin with the Kemvar reducer 30-40%)
sand with 220 to flatten finish (not just denib)

Spray Kemar CV (color matched for each project.)
Spray 2nd coat within 3-4 hours (no sanding needed in this recoat window)

I still use the Kemvar CV (not plus) for my topcoats. (old dog and all), but they are phasing out some of the colorants and eventually everything will be the Kemvar Plus.

Thank you guys so much. For the sealer surfacer, do I have that tinted to match the CV that is going over it? Or just seal and then spray the pigmented CV?

we use the same schedule others mention.. We use the E63W50 kemvar primer but we are a large manufacturer so I buy it in 100 gallon batches already reduced to our spray viscosity in 5 gallon buckets so all we have to do is add catalyst and go. We prime.. force dry... sand 320... prime.. force dry.... sand 400 top coat with the kemvar plus that is color matched... some instances we sand and topcoat again depending on what quality we are looking for.... we generally reduce the topcoat up to 25% with a blend of K27 reducer and butyl cellosolve... We slow it down big time to get it to lay out really smooth. our mixing relates to how much airflow we have in our spray room w/ heated air makeup and the fact that we have a very large force dry oven for curing after flash off.

I spray AcromaPro Matador pigmented CV but the process is the same. I generally get my primer tinted the same as topcoat for anything that isn't a white or off-white. I learned the hard way a few years ago when a client rammed a plate into the edge of a gray door and the resulting chip showed white primer underneath and it stuck out like a sore thumb.
