Spray gun for Dyes and Toners

Up front, I spray less than 5 gal per month. Much of the work I do involves WB dyes and shellac based toners to color match existing work. Shellac is the only solvent based product I use; all my topcoats are WB.

My current Qualspray gun, which draws around 8 cfm at 29 psi, is pretty versatile but I get some pulsing when spraying dyes and toners and that gives mottled color. I compensate by spraying at least two coats but that does not completely eliminate the non-uniform look. I had similar issues with the low end gravity feed HVLP gun I first used, which makes me wonder if the problem might be in my air line and/or filter or regulators.

I'm interested in what you folks recommend for spraying dyes and toners on furniture and cabinets with the most important characteristic being uniformity. For info., my compressor can handle 11 cfm at 40 psi. What should the piping size be for this flow? Thanks very much.

Another piece of info., my compressor, regulated at 90 psi outlet, is about 50 feet from the secondary regulator, and that is typically set at 29 psi. I use a 20 foot 3/8" hose from there to my spray gun.

When you say pulsing,is it like spitting?
Or it's spraying a little more or less?
Are you using gravity gun?
Is it set up with PPS cup.
Check your air cap and make sure no holes are clogged up
Also I like to use mini regulator at the gun

A little more, a little less, not spitting. I had this problem first with a low end gravity feed HVLP conversion gun, and now with my mid range gun with a pressurized 3M PPS cup. I first thought it only happened when the internal liner approached empty but I realize now that it happens even when the liner is full.

The air cap is clean. I used a mini regulator on the inlet of the gravity feed gun. The PPS cup on my newer gun has it's pressure regulator at the gun, so I have the gun air regulator 20 ft upstream.

Thanks,

John

have you cleaned the fluid passage and nozzle lately (both inside and out)? One dried piece of crud at the tip on the outside or anywhere on the inside of the nozzle can even make a Sata spray like a $50.00 spray gun.
When it comes to spraying dye (SW universal dye thinned with DNA) I use a Devilbiss compact gravity gun with a 1.0.
For WB toners (1 to 1 finish to water) I use the same set-up as the dye.
For solvent based toners (1 to 1 finish to butyl acetate); I use a Sata 2000B with a 1.4 but I crank in the needle until the fluid volume is where I want it. For spraying toner I'm looking for the a gun with fine atomization and even particle distribution and then spray it at the lowest air pressure where the gun can maintain those attributes especially if the piece has any depth or profiles.

Thanks for the feedback, all. I'm doing a complete soak and cleanout on the gun. I don't see anything in it, but I'll know it's clean when I'm done and if the problem continues then I'll know it's with the air delivery system. I'm suspecting the problem might be with my step down regulator, 20 feet before the gun. I had a similar problem with the last regulator when it developed a leak. This one seems fine, but the problem is back, so ....

I will look into the guns you all recommended, too. I start to choke when it goes North of $500, considering I used to get pretty darned good results with a $20 throw away gun, but I'm willing to spend the money if the results justify it. Anyone use a CA Tech. FE Line HVLP gun? Their literature says it's made specifically for dyes and toners.

As I was disassembling the gun more fully to soak it this morning I found the packing nut behind the trigger was completely loose. I think I've found the source of the problem.

The gun was pretty clean inside when I looked inside it after disassembly. It's really clean now.

Hopefully that was the problem
If something is loose it could bring air into the nozzle and can make it pulsing as you described
As for the FE LCFM spray gun
You can spray all kind of coating
You just need to get whatever size nozzle/needle for the task
I have one and sprays very nice
Also it runs on low CFM

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
