electric airless pump with an AA gun. Possible?

9/3/18

Trying to creat a portable site finishing rig. Considering if its possible to find the fittings and piece together a rig using a graco 395 pump for the fluid and a turbine unit for the atomizing air and run it through a kremlin excite gun.
This would provide several benefits over a portable compressor; more compact, lighter in weight, supply dry air all the time. The graco pump, obviously does not need compressed air.
I think the whole rig could be assembled into a single cart of some fashion.
Anyone have any experience or know of something like this?

Hello I don't think it will work, you will need minimum 15-20# air pressure for the Kremlin Xcite gun to reduce tails. Maximum your turbine will output is 8-12# and finding fitting might be challenging
Just easier to add a small A/c with a dryer

CA Technologies makes a portable pump/compressor combo on a cart. (see "Portable Air Assist Airless 14:1" halfway down the page on the link below.) I've used my CAT AAA rig (not the combo) with a small cheap 2HP compressor to do site finishing and it worked fine. It was sufficient to power the pump and supply the atomizing air.

I'd think you could get away with a smaller compressor if you're using an electric pump. No idea if the different pump types are compatible with AAA guns, though. Is the 395 a diaphragm pump?

Cheers,
Pat

You really don't have spend big bucks to upgrade, all you require is a 4 cfm compressor and your good to go. The Xcite gun is excellent

I've used my 10:14 with a 1/2 HP compressor and a 5 gallon side saddle air tank. I was just doing small areas at a time and don't know how long I could go before the pressure went to low, but it worked fine.

yes, you can.I did this for awhile before I bought a air motored powered pump. All you need is a smallish pump that will dial down to a medium low pressure without fluid pressure fluctuations (or a add on high pressure fluid regulator...these are expensive), a 1.5 or 2 hp air compressor, half way decent oil & h2o filters (you can skip the oil filter if you use a oil-less compressor), air line and a AAA gun that's capable of handling 3,000 psi, of course you won't be spraying at 3,000psi but to be on the safe side you will want a gun that can handle the max fluid pressure of your pump.
Now with that said if you purchase these items new you're around 1/2 to 1/3 the price of a new air motor powered AAA set-up and without a doubt a air motor powered AAA is a the way to go as you get way better control over fluid pressure especially at the low end and low fluid pressure means a lot less overspray. The point being it might be dollar wise to just pony up for a air powered pump from the get-go.

Nick I think the original question was that he has a Graco paint pump and could he use a turbine to supply enough air to a Kremlin Xcite gun to make it a AAA setup
No he can't due to lack of psi from the turbine

Another thing to do is keep your eyes open for a Graco FinishPro 395. Electric airless pump mounted on a cart complete with the compressor, digital pump control and G40 AAA gun. Used to have one like that and it worked well. Weighed about 100 pounds.

Also, you could check out Graco's new low pressure fine finish tips. They work at lower pressure than the old fine finish tips... No tails at the lowest pressure I could set on a Graco 390... If that works, you save the hassle of a double hose to the gun as well as a compressor

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
