i spray with a kremlin 15 AAA system. 95% of the time i’m using a 06-094 tip with water based finishes.

how long should i expect to be able to spray before i need to replace the tip?

thanks.

there is no magic number to change out time of any a a mfgs tip

so two things to look for

if the tip is giving you a cats eye pattern it is most likely good but see next point, if the pattern turns move oval or ovals out in the middle of the pattern then it is probably shot

another cheap way to determine wear on a tips is the following when the tip is new set your spray pump pressure, trigger the gun into a metal or plastic tube that goes into a bucket or container for either 15 or 30 seconds, then measure the flow in that time period x either 4 or 2 which gives you an approx gallon per minute flow rate, this is far from an exact science but is a inexpensive way to see if your flow rate has changed much since the tip was new

another way to do it but i can't afford it is to buy a good flowmeter but h pressure ones aint cheap

again , not the most exact science but i will get you close as the tip opening , the carbide in the tip, does wear with age,

most of the time i guess i use a wet film gauge if i know my pattern strokes are close to being the same

good luck

herb, thanks for you insight. i think that given the impact of a bad pattern, for $100, i'll just replace the tip. thanks again.

i get pissed at someof my sprayers before you fork out 100 dollars, fill your spray with solvent, jack up the pressure to 80 psi on the pump pressure side, trigger the gun repeatedly sp, you might be able to blow out the tip, 100 dollars is a 100 dollars what is the problem with your pattern tails? lines in the center of the pattern let me know

good luck herb j

Make sure the filter in the gun is clean, it can cause a weird spray pattern if it's clogged. Smooth broaches are pretty handy for cleaning clogged tips as well.

yeah - filters are definitely clean. i've been soaking parts in butyl cellosolve to soften whatever's in there. stuff is flowing nicely - the tip is just giving me a tricky pattern.

i'm seeing a "cats eye" pattern, and notably, the adjustment dial on the gun is really doing nothing. this was a fairly sudden change, but i've been spraying a ton lately, so it's possible that after a year+ of use, it's time. i have a pack of those little tiny cleaning wires, and have been poking at the tip trying to work whatever might be in there out.

thanks again guys.

so if yiou are saying you have no adjustment on your fan pattern here are the issues, the white skinny seal on the fluid out , where the fluid comes out of the gun is either missing or is cracked, also remove you fan pattern controller and see if it is bent if so you need a new one, my guess is that is one of the two tings i mentioned above.....don't buy a tip till we get this narrowed down, lets determine the problem then spend the money on the right partws, those parts are worth a lot of coin

also there are a lot of aftermarket air assist tip cleaners no need to go with a mfg trademark on a generic item

herb do you mean that tiny white o-ring that the tip registers against when it's seated?

no fan pattern usually points to the fluid nozzle oring... the big one that seals the aircap to the fluid nozzle... if it is worn you will have no fan pattern adjustment..... same thing with the tip seal as well but it's usually a dead ringer when your blowing snot out of the aircap if the tip seal is worn or missing as well... the more you poke at the tip orfice with a cleaning needle or broach will quickly wear a tip out..... take good practice of flushing your rig soon as your done spraying..... put the tip/cap back on and trigger the gun at a decent fluid pressure to blow solvent through it..... take it off and use a nylon brush to scrub it a bit from the back side and soak it in solvent till next use....Butyl cell isn't quite hot enough to bust up dried coating... i'd at least use acetone in my soak jar..

no i mean there are tip cleaning needles that were mentioned in an above post, was just saying that there are other mfg of tip cleaning needles that are more robust and easier to use, and they cost less than oem, hope that helps, btw did you try and jack up your fluid pressure and trigger the gun, did it work

look on your part sheet it is a 150-040-329 comes in a pack of ten, i am not referring to the tiny white seal that goes inside your tip,

if you don't have a manual download one, it will save you a lot of headaches

that would be my guess for your fan pattern problem otherwise check out your fan pattern controller

If you suddenly have lost fan control issues, that's not likely the tip. That sounds to me more like your guns either have dirty/clogged air passageways or you have a bad seal in the gun's internals.

We use a heated sonic cleaner (aircraft grade "Simple Green" mixed with water) which cleans even solvent based conversion varnish VERY well. It might eat off some of your anodizing so be cautious how long you crock-pot them in the cleaner.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
