I currently use gemini gem var, while its ok, we just dont get that slick lacquer feel with it
I know its hard to duplicate that precat feel and smoothness but has anyone used gemvar and switched to another cv and had better results, I am talking about pigmented cv the clears are much easier thanks

V84F90037 40 Gloss Sherwin CV... This was formally the Becker Acroma C.V.
has an incredibly smooth silky feel... much better than any precat I've ever sprayed. very forgiving... can be reduced heavily to achieve open pore finishes or straight up for that thick full fill plastic garbage that seems to be loved. If your a small user it's very economical because you can catalyze only what you need when you need it....The catalyst has a one year shelf life as well. keep it out of the light and cool.

Shane, I can't find any info on that V84F90037. Is there a name on the can like "Sherwood something something" that might help me find it?

Also, does it use the SW Kemvar catalyst like V66V21 or V66V26?

I agree with Shane The SW F3 is a great product; trouble free application, sands well so self seal is good to go, silky smooth to the touch (customers love that), fairly priced (for years I paid $175.00 per five but as of 1/19 I now pay $200.00 per 5) and formaldehyde free (your customers will love that too!)
The down side; the clear is slightly amber so you can't clear coat pigmented jobs with it, I've had trouble getting the pigmented from time to time, and I don't believe it's as durable as the SW water-white. That said in the 1,200 or so gallons I've sprayed in the last 4- 5 years I've had two failures... one a dishwasher panel that was cut to fit on the job and left unsealed on the cut edge and a bar top in a home that's a after school hang-out for a pack of teenage boys...nuff said.

PS; it uses the F3 catalysts, one for clear and a different one for the white.
The clear has a 24 hour pot life and the pigmented is 5 days!

The one I'm referring to is called
Kemvar 9320S and uses different catalyst and reducers based on slow, standard & fast drying... the regular catalyst is R07K10003..
I personally use the slow catalyst and reducers.... as well as adding 5% butyl cellosolve to slow it down even more... lays out beautiful... I have the luxury of force cure/gas fired oven to cure so I can slow it down to lay out beautiful and make sure it's fully cured.

Whoops, l apologize if l am confusing products. I assumed the F3 is the Becker-Acroma product that is now a SW product was the one you were referring to. Even if it's not the one, the SW F3 is still a great product and worth looking into.

Becker Acroma formulations have a softer feel to them and also have better distension
than SW formulations. Get some samples and run some tests.

The SW formulations are one in the same..... Still coming out of Canada from Becker plant... just a different bucket. I know for a fact because I go through hundreds and hundreds of gallons a year of it and I'm in close conversations with Sherwin when batch times/production gets hung up on orders coming out of Canada. I've laid down a lot of different coatings and for a CV this is the best performing and feeling CV I've ever come across... I've tried them all.. from Akso,Milesi,Chemcraft,Mohawk,Sherwin/becker,ML Camp,Valspar & others that are smaller.... Valspar being the worst product I've personally had results with...Hands down this takes the cake IMO.

I'm going to second/third the praises for the clear Sherwin Williams F3 stuff. I've sprayed a few jobs with it. My normal clear is their Sherwood WW V84F83 (which is good in its own right).

But that F3 takes the cake. I can't use it on most jobs since it's not truly "water white" but on the jobs I have used it, it's been absolutely fantastic to spray. Hands down, the fastest curing, user-friendly, best looking CV I've sprayed.

I'm interested in trying the SW F3 conversion varnish, but I'm getting quoted a price of $150/gal, 5 gal min. A far cry from the $200/5 gal others have mentioned.

Currently using AXALTA (formerly Valspar) at about $65/gal for custom color matches. anybody else have any info on what they're currently paying for this product? I'd love to switch to a formaldehyde free CV product but $150 a gallon kind of a shocker. My door manufacturer sells me Becker Acroma for the same price and they double their cost on it. What up SW?

They are obviously quoting you the wrong price. If you haven't already, talk to your SW paint rep directly or if he's the one quoting that price try his boss...and show him this thread.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.

  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
