First Catalyzed the Clawlock 2 withC149 Care Catalyst at 12.8 oz per gallon. Stir for 10-15 Mins. Add M.L. Campbell Thinner 20% C160 36. Stir for 10-15 Mins Spray one coat, no where even getting close to the max film thickness. some of the cabinets dried two days some one day some six hours. Sanded with 320 grit Free cut sanding paper. Blow off and Tacked with a tack cloth. Catalyzed The White Resistant with 12.8 oz of Care Catalyst C1491 Stirred for 10-15 mins. Sprayed One coat . Let dry for two hours maybe three. Wrinkled during drying.

Had same issues. No one had good answers. Finally switched to a different brand, I haven't had a single issue since. that was 4 years ago. ML's service and tech support was really disappointing. Made the switch to chemcraft, they have significantly better primers, and topcoats work great. Dry times are also pretty superior.

Worn out sanding media can cause this, but obviously I cannot say that this was your issue.

You know how sanding sponges and orbital pads can get blunted, but still feel "rough enough" that you feel justified in using them, so you just scrub a little harder, trying to get all the life out of them you can.

I've found that this often burnishes it flat rather than scuff it smooth. That will prevent good intercoat adhesion.

I do have to admit, I only had this problem spraying Campbell. Same product-- Clawlock and Resistant, or Clawlock and Stealth. Happened on both, intermittently. Very frustrating. Since then we switched to Becker, and then later Sherwin Williams, neither of their CV's have done this.

The ONLY time we see this is when we are given "pre-primed" moldings, because the primer that is used on them is little more than a garbage layer of talc and diluted dollar store white glue.

I've seen many many post about problems with MLC in general... the wrinkling is not a sanding issue.. it's a chemical issue. You finish schedule is spot on and I do not have any other conclusion other than chemically the CV is a bad batch. I was thinking maybe you had some timing issues with the topcoat being sprayed over uncured primer or you could possibly box coating your topcoat and the first pass flashes too quickly and your next wet pass can cause it to wrinkle...

I've had 2 bad batches of Clawlock 2 in the last 2 years. It's a shame, because when it works it behaves really well.

E63W50041 This primer was formerly Becker Matador that is now absorbed into the Sherwin Williams Family..... builds like a dream and sands like a dream.... can be box coated to desired thickness and sanded back to spec to fill MDF edges/profiles if needed.... then Topcoat with the standard pigmented Kemvar Conversion Varnish they offer..... I literally go well over a thousand+ gallons a year of this material and have never had issues other than human mistakes... mostly sheen issues with the color matches they perform at the product finishes facility.... The finish itself is perfection.... for the clears I use T67F7 Vinyl sealer catalyzed and then I use their Becker product V84F90037 Kemvar 9320S.... absolutely beautiful and lays down like a dream if mixed out like I do with butyl cellosolve and the appropriate reducers/catalyst. awesome stuff...Never had a chemical issue... period with Sherwin

I'm usig the chemcraft Plastiprimer & the PLasticolor. For clearcoats I'm using danseal & Evar-80. I've gone 5 years without any adhesion or wrinkling issues.

I'll never look back at ML Campbell. Their products just arent up to snuff. I had constant issues with adhesion and wrinkling that I just dont suffer from after moving to a superior product. The only good products they sell are their woodsong II stains, and Krystal. Everything else was a dissapointment.

Not a salesman..... Just a Finisher with over 25 years fulltime hands on experience spraying coatings and currently responsible for over $40 million annually worth of finished architectural woodwork... finish failure is not an option on multimillion dollar commercial projects so my job is to make sure I know what the heck I'm doing with a coating. Period.

Curious as to how this turned out? Also, what was your substrate sanded to, before the primer was applied.

I gave up. Now I use white vinyl primer under it and have no problems. But wish I had a fix. Sanded always with 150 grit

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
