Steel table legs with timber feet

Hi. I'm making a dining room table. The timber top will be connected to a steel frame. The legs are 11/2" steel pipe. The legs end in timber 'feet' of approx 16" height. My problem is how to secure the pipe to the foot. I discussed this with welder, who'll make the frame. Best we came up with is weld a lag bolt to end of pipe, pre drill timber and screw on(with gripfill for extra bite. Have a look at picture of scale model. Welder will link the steel with cross bars. Still worried about racking and wobbling though. I'd be grateful for your input and suggestions. Much appreciated! Thank you, Henk

There is a reason no one has ever built a table like this before.

Bore through the logs.
Weld a foot plate on the bottom of the legs.
Rout out the bottom of the logs for the foot plate, so the steel is well off the floor.
Pass the legs through the log, and screw them in from the bottom.
Use a larger diameter pipe to slip over the exposed part of the leg; let it go all the way to the top, or at least far enough away that you can weld it to the leg without scorching the log.
Now the log is trapped, and solid. Have fun.

Bore out the logs, epoxy the steel pipe inside it. If you bore deep enough, the epoxy will just be there to keep it on the pipe if they lift the table. I think the 1 1/2" pipe will really look undersized if the table is of much size. 2" or 3" will keep the scale right so it doesn't look like it is on tooth picks.

have your welder weld on a hollow square to the inside of the pipe. then fit a tenon into it and epoxy or screw it in place.

I would recommend buying your stainless steel table legs from a commercial B2B store like the link I posted here; then replacing their feet attachments with your wood feet attachments. I would make a shallow hollow center at the bottom and top of your wood feet and thread a bolt through there to attached to the steel leg.
