Chair parts or chair outsourcing5/4
Thanks in advance. Been a 95% custom cabinetry business & 5% furniture business for 15 years. I have never been asked to build a chair and honestly do not want to. But I have a commissioned table to build which is in our wheelhouse and they are looking for chairs. Do any of you or does anybody have a company that sells chairs in several varieties unfinished OR do you know of company that sells chair components for assembly? I know Matthew Burak used to do this. But don't see it on their current site. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you-
J.S. Greene, Juhasz, Christopher Douglas all sell unfinished frames. I would advise against making them until you understand the basics. I had a designer that had her customer order their dining chairs from the cabinet maker because he was $300 less than us. The first time the couple sat on them they broke apart and fell on the floor. No corner blocks and a serious liability issue. FYI.
To really design a chair properly you need to build a couple full sized mock ups. Let the client sit in them, see if they find them comfortable.
The good news here is that you can build the jigs/fixtures when developing the final prototype, and use that as a dry run. Once you are setup, the time invested in the design/prototype process pays off.
