CABINET INSTALLER PRICING

Hey guys, just curious to know what is the going rate for " per box" kitchen cabinet installation.
Im a cabinet maker in south florida and im a little slow right now and considering going out to get some kitchen cabinet installation jobs.
Someone told me about 2 years ago it was $75 per box. I wasnt interested at the time so i didnt ask him if the $75 per box included crown, fillers, toe kicks, panels, light valance, etc.

Can anyone help with this?
Thanks

$65.00 per box is what we pay our subs for installation including trims. Located in North Carolina.

In Hawaii a big box pays 89.00 plus extras. I operate as a general contractor so I get closer to 175.00 plus extras like crown appliance install drywall repair etc.

Most of our 15-20 cabinet jobs go for 1200-1500 install. That includes measurement. Install takes 1.5 -2 days.

There you go... for what it's worth, the "going rate" is anywhere from $65 - $175/box plus extras... that ought to narrow it down for you...

If that doesn't tell you it's irrelevant what others charge, it matters what you need to charge to be in business, really can't think of another way to make it any clearer...

KAP,

The OP asked a legitimate question and he was polite about it. He got some useful information so it was worth asking.

Cabmaker, as was my response both polite and direct... don't know how it could be read another way...

As to it being legitimate, that's a perspective, but it's legitimacy is reliant on it being a prudent strategy in developing pricing... while those who responded provided their range, from different markets BTW, how does that in any way help him determine what he needs to charge when the range was so wide, in a different market and he has no idea the make-up of their business? Especially if he wants to make $75-$100K/year and others might be happy making less? And that is only ONE metric that pricing encompasses...

Been where he's at, and rather than let him waste years and lost money on a pricing strategy that relies on a "going rate" instead of charging what he needs to charge to be in business, and focus his customer acquisition on finding people that can support his business and the income he wants to make...

Just another perspective to the last few posts it just might be that the op knows what he needs to make on the job but just doesn't want to leave money on the table. The last thing we want to be is the guy who's undercutting everyone else and dosen't realize it.

In Central Florida, for semi custom cabinets i pay subs $35/box, fill, or 8' stick of molding. Extra if they deliver pieces. I charge $75-85 which is inline with big box stores.
For custom pieces we build, i charge at least twice that and have salaried employees install.

20-25% of the cabinetry cost for high end in San Francisco and Marin County if a contractor/architect/PM/and designer is involved.

Yep, Fl seems to be a lower cost market, wish it was not so. We avoid the low end (rta's) and focus on mid to upper mid projects done well.

I agree with Kap. You have to charge what makes you money. If you charge by the box and everything is large boxes you can make a killing but if it small boxes and a lot of fitting how does one box price fits all . Look at the job an price it out that way your covered .

Chris,
This is in the Denver front range area.
I charge 50.00 per box and 35.00 per 8' stick of light rail, crown, crown backer, etc...
That is on mid grade installs, 25.00 per finished and panel, 10.00 per filler, 15.00 per corbel, also 3.00 per pull drilled I usually average 500.00 - 600.00 per day.

There are areas of cherry hills village where I charge 100.00 per box and I actually average the same money per day but the standards that the client expects are way higher so install goes slower.

I've been doing this for 20 years so I think what most people on here are saying is that your pricing becomes clear with experience. No magic bullet pricing out there, just go do it . If you are happy with what you made great , if not adjust from there. Your efficiency will dictate your dollars more than anything else.

I haul a 14 foot trailer with two of everything and tons of hardware, 2010 and always bring my lunch and a gallon of ice water so I get quite a bit done every day.

Most importantly just do something and have fun the money will work itself out if you do.

Cheers

Chris, We are also in the Denver/ front Range area and I agree with the post by JK interiors I couldn’t have said it better. I work with several different installers around the country and all have the same challenge some are one man show and some have several employees but all are trying to get a fair days wage for a fair days work. What you charge is relevant to the level of detail that your customer demands, some shop price and some shop value and sometimes it’s difficult to determine what they want. It also matters if it’s a residential installation or a condo or apartment complex that you would have multiple units to install they will be about $20 a box sometimes they are priced by the room just depends. What I am saying is there is really no set rule you just have to get a feel for the job, accessibility, is it on the ground level or the 3 rd floor this all make a difference. Best wishes Boyd

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
