high gloss white laminate with matching edgebanding - glue questions

Ok, so got this job to do a italian style 'high gloss white lacquer look'. Decided to try out this system from dixieply using a product of theirs called acrylux. Problem is, the only way we know to apply both the laminate & edges are with contact cement, by spraying it on, here are our problems: (we are using mdf substrate)

1 . The panels seem to look dimpled, not quite like there are grains of sand stuck on the substrate, but more like maybe the unevenness of the sprayed on contact cement is transferring through? How do you create an even surface spraying on contact?

2. The glue line between the edge banding and laminate face is kind of obvious how do you minimize this?

Hey Antonio,

You can lay up the laminate in a press with a "firm" glue line to fix the problem of the contact telegraphing through.

As far as the glue line, you can laminate the face last so it's on the edges and not as visible, but quite a bit more time consuming.

I've found that you're better off going to white vinyl wrap (which has more of an "orange peel" finish) if they're on a budget, or just spraying them gloss white. I've had fantastic results with automotive finishes on mdf, and at the end of the day not that much more expensive.

I'm just so darned curious. How could you bid the job with no experience with the material or process? Do they make a thicker grade of laminate?

Because, Rich, in this business there are projects that come up that are seemingly very similar to other successfully completed projects, so we go into it with the experience we do have, and, with every other job we always have a bit of cash allowance in it for the unexpected. In every job i price, there is always an exit strategy , a plan b or c. Sure, it may dip into my profit a bit but eventually the job always gets done well.

Antonio,
The kitchens people are seeing using this material are being edged on laser no glue line edgebanders. Rehau offer cut to size edged parts, not sure if they ship to your location. There is a company in Denver doing cut and edged to size with the acrylics. They also layup the panels.

thanks alan, i discovered that recently as well about the laser edging, but i also heard (not sure how true it is) that in our part of the woods (the bahamas) laser edging does not hold up due to heat/humidity. I spoke to a company that is sending me samples so may go that route for future jobs that involve kitchens, but this particular job being a laundry room (yes they want shiny doors in their laundry room LOL ) i think i can get away with sticking on the edgebanding if i can get a hold of some white contact cement that matches the banding. Looking into it :)

we use clear contact cement for jobs that we can't run through the edgebander. Sometimes we see the exact same thing when we use fire rated core and have to lay up panels for a hospital job, its amazing that what we notice is not really noticeable once it hits the field- serious.

Rolled on cold press glue and pinch roller or for something with 5 or 6 doors, yellow glue and a hand roller ladet it set up overnight with a few sheets on the layups for weight

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
