We am contemplating buying cedar from the west coast. We are a manufacturer of millwork products in NC and have our own saw mill up to 24". We are thinking truckload quantities and are thinking about just buying logs untouched and cutting them into sizes on an as need basis. Any thoughts welcome.

I think you will find that shipping logs coast to coast will be a losing proposition. Too much weight. Buy the lumber. Bob

I agree. 70% of the shipping weight will be slabs, sawdust & water. The ideal situation would be for you to have some sort of exchange arrangement with another mill to send a truck loaded with kiln dry cedar in one direction and back haul local lumber (or other material).

Also, the logs contain a lot of sapwood which is usually not desired in the sawn product as it has little natural decay resistance.

I live in Oregon, the cedar that grows around here is light and weak; I don't even collect it for firewood. Of course I'm unsure of your useage, but this wood is nothing like the cedars I've used from more Eastern states.
