PEG 300 vs. PEG 1000

Howdy all, I'm just checking if anyone here has info on this substitution. I read somewhere, i think by Gene Wengert that PEG 300 was a cheaper alternative to PEG 1000 for treating lumber cookies. I have only seen that one place. I was looking at ordering 55 gallons of the stuff and wanted to double check that the information was accurate. Everywhere i've seen in the research states PEG 1000 Also, anyone have leads on the cheapest PEG? I've found PEG 300 for $900, 55 gallon drum, delivered. Anybody monkeying with this stuff out there? Thanks

PEG 300 has greater water solubility than PEG 1000, so the PEG in wood treated with that will be more susceptible to leaching if exposed to liquid water. Its higher hygroscopicity also means PEG 300 treated wood will be more likely to feel somewhat damp at higher relative humidity. The attached article by Stamm is I believe some of the original research.

thanks for the response bill. I will look into it. Still very expensive. Not being a a solid at room temperature makes me wonder if it would penetrate the lumber easier?

Have you found you PEG 300 for less expensive than $900.00 for your 55 gallons drum? In which zip are you located? I have 8 drums in CA, 72 in IL and 60 in SC, I usually sell PEG 400 to wood shop.
