Rock Elm

just felled a 70 foot rock elm(cork elm) on my property, did not realize that this wood is tougher than hickory and harder than white oak and is the toughest wood I've ever cut with a chainsaw. Beautiful white wood with a red heart and dense like rock maple. I want to save some of the 6-8" branches in 4 foot lengths to make some furniture-possibly some butcher blocks. the rest will be cut up for firewood except for the 35 foot straight trunk(about 21" across at the cut).....has anyone out there used rock elm for woodworking?....I understand that it is very seldom seen in woodworking anymore because of it's rarity

I am in Ontario. Too bad you are
so far away. I would love to make a table
out of rock elm.
Below is a link in wood database.
University of Guelph in Ontario has a program for trying to get Dutch Elm disease
(DED) resistant American Elm.
They probably would be interested in a
Rock Elm got as big as yours without
DED.

I would gladly share in exchange for getting the trunk pulled out of my woods......have looked on other properties in this region and have not seen any rock elm, the maps show the southern range of these trees extending to Tennessee, I think what I have is an anomaly, There are dozens of them from saplings to larger trees-all healthy, possible someone planted or transplanted them some 75+ years ago
