We have always run 1 1/4" x 1" pitch blades (for perhaps 15 years). Last batch of blades through a Morse distributor gave us some trouble, several broke on the weld, some broke clean on the weld after the first resharp, and some were cracked on the weld before the first resharp, and they wont warranty a weld break after a resharpening. Never had this trouble before (same supplier) but... The issue got me looking around at other blade options and Im seeing some really aggressive pricing on 7/8" pitch blades from a few sources. Some are 7-8 dollars per band (or more) less than we are paying. We are sawing all green hardwoods (poplar on up, appalachian region) and are in the low HP range (20). Im thinking of switching. Only issue is we have a full profile sharpener (full grind on the rake, hook, and gullet) that was a chore to setup (supposed to be "automatic" but in many years of use have JUST gotten it to a point where we can leave it unattended through a full band).
I feel like my fighting with the sharpener to this point I know it well enough to get it quickly dialed in to a different blade geometry but wondering if anyone has any input on the drop to 7/8"?
Will the closer tooth spacing cut nails and barbed wire better? (har har har.. that was a joke of course)
Any input is greatly appreciated.
