Spiral carbide dovetail bit?

In my shop, I have a dovetailer that uses a single flute cutter, which comes stock as a straight edge, brazed carbide bit. It sits in a holder that is eccentric and you use the "cam" adjustment to make the bit cut looser or tighter.

We make predominantly solid wood drawer boxes, with some from Baltic Birch. I know the cut quality can be improved over the stock bit with something after market.

Which leads to my question: Does anyone know if a tooling company makes a single flute, solid carbide spiral that would replace this type of bit? Im heading down to the IWF next week and will bring one stock bit to show/talk to some of the tooling companies. But if someone is already making a replacement as stock, I'd like to know. Prob cheaper than getting a few custom made as well.

The bit is for my Cantek machine, but the same bit is used in some of the Omec machines as well.

Will any of the Vortex bits fit your machine? If not, I bet they can make you one.

Hi Andrew, the machine you have there uses an eccentric dovetail bit (the spindle is centric). By rotating the bit in the chuck you change the cutting circle and ultimately change how tight or loose the joint is. I have not seen a two flute eccentric bit for that model.

The automatic machine we have (JDT75) comes with 2-flute bits (spiral bit is optional) and will produce a nice finish in plywood. The spindle on this machine is eccentric. This is the only semi-auto machine with a 2-flute cutter as far as I know.

If you see in my first post, I am looking to get a single flute cutter. Not a standard two flute.

I use single flute spiral carbide bits in my CNC router, so I cannot see why a dovetail in the same design (single flute spiral in solid carbide) cannot be made. I will be speaking to my regular tooling supplier (Royce/Ayr) at the show but was wondering if this bit is already being made by someone.

That being said - Ryan - I believe the bit is not "eccentric" as the ground shaft is cenetred with the body of the cutter. The chuck that the bit gets fastened to on the machine, does have an eccentric or off centered middle part. Once the bit is secured to the collet, the collet itself can be rotated which brings the cutting edge of the cutter closer in or further away from,, the spinning axis of the spindle.

With a two flute cutter, in this design of chuck, only one flute would be doing any cutting anyhow so two flutes isnt going to improve things.

The stock cutter is not "bad" per say, but I am just looking for something even better, thats all. And speaking to some tooling people, a spiral carbide is what I am after.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
