Jointer planer add-ons

Looking into Jointer planer add-ons and trying justify value without being able to get my hands on the equipment. Read a lot forums, but there seems to be more brand pageantry with smaller, hobby groups as opposed to professional shop level users; think i was guilty of this at some points.

So looking at griggio 530, minimax fs 52, felder ad941, format dual 51 in 7.5-10 h.p.

I am a 1 1/2 man shop, mostly cabinets and built-ins but shifting to hardwood furniture. Found exception price on neglected hickory, white oak and red oak. So, I'm stocking up and letting it dry out.

Questions:

1 Segmented in-feed roller with rubber for rough sawn, twisted 8/4 hickory @ 6-12' widths. Will the segmented rollers leave a mark or does the rubber coat negate that? And can I take finer passes, less than 1/8" with this set-up without adjusting roller pressure for 1/8 thick maple edgebanding and face-frames?

2. Tersa vs Helical, reading tersa is better for fine finish via sharper hss knives and that the carbide inserts have to be thicker, changing the rake and not great for fine finish. I clean up on drum sander/ros. Also heard tersa is great for rough lumber with carbide knives, is that true, better than helical?

Thanks

i have the martin j/p which is made by griggio, also 530mm blades. it's a beast, performs very well. i would suggest tersa blades, ideally carbide for long life. the cut quality on the tersas is exceptional.

let me know if you have any specific questions on the machine.

Hey David,

I'm piecing together info. but I never heard of a "helicoidal in-feed driving roller" that is on the Griggio 530. The definition is less important than knowing if you can you take lighter than 1/8th of inch passes with this J/P without leaving marks? My J/P has a serrated roller that leaves indents at less than 1/8. Also, are you comfortable putting in different thickness and rough sawn pieces with that roller, the same way you might feed a segmented in-feed unit?

Just like to hear your opinion why you went with the Martin 300, over the griggio and if you ever considered the minimax/nova 520?

Thanks,

Erik

less than 1/8"? absolutely. less than... .015? probably not, unless you're milling ipe. i have a metal serrated infeed head, and it's fine for thin cuts, just not super-thin cuts, but that's where the wide belt comes in. if the head is the same as is in my martin, you won't need to take 1/8" off to remove the infeed roller marks (outfeed is polymer).

i did look at the minimax, but ended up buying the martin at the same time i bought my slider. zero regrets, it's a great machine. the only upgrade i would consider is to a full martin jointer and planer, but that's a $50k investment, and for my use the combo is more than sufficient.

we put Aigner extension rails on each of the j/p tables, and when working with very long stock the tables come in handy. something to consider if you go with the griggio.

Thanks David, now I need to figure out which cutter head but there's plenty of info on that debate.

the machine i owned prior to the martin had a segmented head. personally, i'd choose tersa with carbide knives over that. i have the option to put a segmented head in the martin, and i won't do it.

good luck with your purchase.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
