Anyone own a shaving mill? I was reading about shortages of and high prices for sawdust and shavings for animal bedding. It seemed to be talking about the western US in particular. I live in the southeast so I was wondering about the market for shavings in my area, and if a shaving mill would give a good return on investment.

I'm here in Oregon and there is a demand, but they want clean ,dry material and thats truck loads. So not much help for the little guy. Most everything is going to co-gen or biofuel. Read today that sawdust in Montana is hitting $100 a ton. Guy might think chipping for hog fuel.

A guy in our area has an interesting scheme. He has arranged with a couple of dozen farmers around the county to accept (for a fee that they can keep) truck loads of tree limbs and yard waste. Then he picks this up and chips it. This allows the dropping off place to profit, allows the property owners to get rid of their yard waste (which cannot be done here with the regular trash pick-up), and gives him a free stream of waste for chipping, composting, and sale as sawdust. He also gathers up wood waste from other operations, but the waste stream from property owners and others is considerable and he sell beau coup trailer loads of chips, compost, and dyed mulch. Everybody wins.

The market is doing well in the southest we are buying a bigger mill so we have a 30 in. salsco for sale. The only problem is that most people don't know what shavings are. They think it's the same as dust or grindings.

Dried Shavings in my area are going for $2,000 a truck load while green shavings are going for $1,300. I'd suggest a Jackson Shaving Mill. They've been building them since 1961 and know what they're doing. Plus the knife changing goes a lot quicker and easier with their cartridge system.

our company has just purchased a douglas 40" shaver in b.c. canada. Looking for any ideas for sales. We are very versatile. Will be able to do dry pine, cedar. 3.8 cu. ft. bags. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

We have a small Salsco mill in New England and are having a terrible time selling the product. Everyone seems to have a complaint regardless of what we do. Also having a hard time finding anyone with any ability to correctly sharpen blades. Seems to be one giant headache. Ironic since Salsco is out of CT...

We have found the Kimber Shavings Mills have very high and consistant production and a very good product. The maintance and operations are simple. Before I bought anything I wouold look at the Kimber 2488 or Kimber 4488. The Kimber folks are very knowledgeable in green, dry and bagging operations.
