Frozen oak with cracks, any producers?7/31
Please see the attached product. From my knowledge it is from Russia and is dried-frozen to stress up the cracks. Has anyone seen this product in the market? Do you know who can product this for me?
Just a couple questions out of curiosity? What do you use this for, and did you say it's freeze-dried?? I'm not sure I understand, but I had to laugh when I seen the picture. If my oak looked like the picture you posted-I would be looking for a new job, and I'm sure that noone here in northwestern PA would hire me to sweep their kilns let alone run them. I have never seen oak that checked.
This "defect" woudl be called severe surface checking (followed by internal checking or honeycomb). In red oak with short rays, you can make this happen with lots of heat. I have seen this in press dried material; in fact, I think it might have been patented. It will not work with all oaks.
