How to make a thin, flexible, translucent lamp shade with veneer. Looking for a substrate (some sort of plastic, fabric, composite?) and adhesive to allow me to bend tight curves. A three ply seems to be too thick for it to be translucent.

I do not have any suggestions on this, but I am curious to know how would you go about making this lamp shade. The plan sounds interesting. Could you share what design is in your mind. Maybe a sketch of it or something.

It is a free flowing design, no sketching on this one. Prototypes and templates will be made from card board. sorry

If you can use a mold, you could try using clear epoxy as the "substrate". Cover the mold with a release film, coat the inside of the shade with epoxy, and bend it around the mold. Secure with tape until dry. The hardened epoxy will allow the shade to hold its shape.

You could try acrylic shoji screen materials, essentially thin plastic with some slight texture. Probably would glue well with epoxy or UF. Also thin plexiglass or acrylic sheet; can be found in very thin sheets. Scuff heavily and epoxy the veneer down. I agree 3-ply would not transmit much light. I have found a single layer of veneer is just about thick enough depending upon the veneer, some allow more light through than others. Some judicious sanding to thin out the veneer might help.
