20 mil paperback seperating from backing
4/1/13
We just pressed some white oak rift cut 20 mil on paperback and we have a pcs that the veneer is separating from the paperback. It is the whole corner of the veneer. The backing is glued securely to the substrate, a mdf, with a epi glue, and no bleed through paperback. The veneer is completely separated from the paper backer. We have about 15 sheets to glue up and I just wonder if this is a bad sheet or can be expected from time to time. You can keep pulling the veneer and it will separate from backing that is firmly glued to mdf. Was done in vacuum press. Is this common for white oak? I think we can glue it back down and repress but do not want to continue and have all of it pull apart.

I would send it back. Why are you using paperback? I've never used it because I never hear anything good about it. I would order 2 ply if you want the big sheets premade.

I used to make paperbacked veneer, and typically when you make this stuff you press several packets together for production purposes. Long story short, there is a strong possibility that more problems will appear in the other sheets. I agree with Rich on both points, send it back and use wow.

I have used paper backed veneer for over 20 years with out any serious problems.
I have found that prep is key. Cleaning with de-natured alcohol and sealing raw edges makes all the difference. My supplier applys the 3M Hi-Perfomance adhesive which works very well. Below is an example one a recent job.

You pressed the veneer to the paper yourself or were you using paper backed veneer from an outside source?
