Finish Cracking on Fire Rated MDF

I have had delayed Finish Cracking and checking on Eucalyptus veneer laid on Nauf Fire Rated MDF., this is for both Flat line UV and Conventional Finish. The board is borate base fr mdf , The borate was so rich it had to be cleaned from the board prior to applying glue, and hot pressed, using approved glue,temperature and time.
Has any one else had issues like this

What type of glue did you laminate with. If it is a white or yellow glue (pva) the borate could have caused the problem.

this was bonded with a modified pv glue
National Casein # 5784 pressed at 185 for 80-90 secs per manufactures spec in a water heated hot press.

Yes, I have seen some weird stuff with fire rated nauf MDF. Mostly darkening of veneers over time. I try not to use it. See post by Rob #4/22/2011

I had this very problem with FRMDF. The Borate reacts with the glue causing it to cure almost immediately. I actually hand rolled some pva on a piece and it turned into a jell. I brought in all different types of pva's from different manufacturers and ran countless tests, no luck. Urea will work, but in my case this wasn't an option, this was a LEED job. I contacted the manufacturer of the substrate and they admitted there was a problem and subsequently released a disclaimer on their website stating that using this product was at your own risk and they would not be liable. I spoke with the rep and he told me that they were going to change the formula, replace the borate with a different chemical but not pull the problem product off the shelf. This was over 2 1/2 years ago. You may have gotten some of the old product.

The glue most likely pre-cured which in turn did not create the bond required to hold the veneer in place. Eucalyptus is tough to work with to begin with so it is essential that your glue line is not contaminated at all. Talk to the core manufacturer. I suspect it's Sierra Pine ask them about the disclaimer.

Along the same line (almost and sorry to hop on this thread), but I have a large commercial paneling project with Qrt. Figured Anigre, all flat panels on a Class 1 fire rated particle board (Duraflake FR). Is the problem going to occur with this, too, do you know?

The only 2 problems I ever encountered with FRPB was many years ago.It just so happened that the salt they used to manufacture the board wasn't ground up fine enough so a few months after install, all the panels started to get little tits in them from the salt swelling.In addition it also had a hevy, powdery residue that would cause the same reaction with my pva as is the case with the Medite FR. This was JC Pennys corporate hq in Dallas,Tx. Since that time I have not had one problem with the product. If it comes in with that powdery residue, I would run some tests before going into production.I would recommend running the board through your sander, always a good idea to calibrate anyway if time permits, that will knock off the residue and give you a much better finished product.
