How To Adhere Metal to a Backer Board7/20
We have 2 ft. x 2 ft. .032 aluminum sheets in which we require a stiff, thin backing board to display on a wall.
1. What type of backing board could we use to support the aluminum pieces?
2. What type of adhesive should we use to bind the aluminum to the thin backer board ?
Also, if I use a ½ inch pressed wood to apply to .027 to .032 aluminum sheets, do I paint or seal the pressed wood before applying adhesive, and if so, what coating or sealing product should I use?

Are you aware of how much aluminum moves? Contact cement is about the only thing I would try, but no promises since the aluminum could buckle very easily if exposed to heat.
I do not recall doing aluminum panels, but I have glued steel to plywood many times. Usually we will use an 18 gauge steel and glue this onto a 1/2 sheet of plywood. We use contact adhesive, preferable spray it on. You will get better coverage. Rolling contact adhesive on steel is a little difficult.
The only time we seal the back side is if the panels are going to be outside. We did a hotel last year and used over 20 5 x 10 sheets of 18 gauge steel, glued to 1/2" plywood and faux painted. Some of these were installed on an outside bar and I worried about the outside panels, but so far, no problem and we are in Northern Michigan where winter means snow and cold.
We have also cut and installed stainless steel behind a range and we had to glue this to a thin plywood to flush the stainless up with the tile on each side.
We have a Plasma cutter, so we use more steel than other shops in our area. I have never had a panel come off.
I would probably use a thicker gauge of Aluminum. That thin of a gauge might give you telegraphing and not be as smooth as you would like.
I want to add to a comment I made above. Be sure you clean off the steel before you glue it. Steel has an oil film and we clean it with lacquer thinner. Sometimes we even sand it because there is some oxidation.
I am adding some pictures of some steel panels we did for a local hotel. We used a product made by a company in California, Sculpt Nouveau. They helped us with advice and these panels and the two doors turned out good. We top coated the Sculpt Nouveau product with a clear Automotive lacquer.
We designed the sliding doors for the Board Room, had a welding shop make up the frame and we did the steel, glued the steel panels onto 1/2" plywood and installed the panels into the frame.
These are decorative panels. This is something cabinets shops can consider. Who else can do something like this?
