Eastern Red Cedar Closet Residue9/24
I installed unfinished Eastern Red Cedar T&G closet paneling and the homeowner says they are getting a residue on their clothing from the Cedar. On different days I've wiped the paneling down with acetone, alcohol and a water moistened cloth. They still say this happening. Any experiences with this or suggestions
Cedar Oil. It will come out of the heartwood in ERCedar. It is advisable to use paper drawer liners to isolate clothing from the Cedar.
I have heard that if the ERC is air dried, then the oil doesn't 'set' and will bleed out for many years. If kiln dried to the proper temp, the oil will set - solidify, and will not bleed out.
I used to use ERC in clothing type storage, but quit because it was strong a smell or the oil complaint. Now I use it - if it is wanted at all - as a small panel fastened above the drawer where fabrics will not contact it, but it will still have the moth repellant factor and scent.
While kiln drying will set the pitch, it will no longer have the smell after the volatile are boiled off.
I'm wondering if this is in a space where the temperature is getting high?
