TRACKING EMPLOYEE PRODUCTION9/26
We have a mid sized Custom Cabinet Shop with 45 employee's our main product is highly custom high end residential cabinets. I would like to hear different opinions on how to track individual employee production.
Hey Bob, I have posted this opinion before and will do so again. Having your employee's track their time for every job is a nightmare from the emps perspective and in my experience yields specious results from your perspective. We hated it and guesstimated more than estimated if you catch my drift. Just my 2 cents.
I am investigating the same idea.
I am wanting to be able to track several different things. 1. Where is the order physically located in the shop. 2. How long does it take for each employee to perform their part of the work. 3. How much time was used to produce the order.
I found a system that uses bar codes to track the order.
I am currently experimenting with their 30 day free trial.
You would need at least one computer for people to scan into and a wireless scanner for each employee who will use the system.
I am interested in your feedback of this or any other system you have found.

It is not worth it.
Your return on investment will be better on just about anything else.
I think it's important to know what your purpose is for collecting the information. What exactly are you trying to achieve? Are you trying to know if Bob puts out more work than Suzy? Or if Joe puts out 30% more work per month than Mike? Or are you trying to answer some other question.
I'm going to respectfully disagree with those who state that it's not worth the time to collect this data. I think the data, when collected efficiently, and processed into information can be quite useful.
The problem is having a good system to collect and retrieve the data. For us, that system is ShopPAK, and it's PC data collection module running on tablets via WiFi on the shop floor. It's not perfect (what is?), but it allows the guys to enter their time into an operation on a work order quickly. This isn't something we hope they do...We expect it..On every job, on every day.
The fact that they are entering directly into our system on the tablets eliminates tedious re-entry of the data in the office at a later date.
Now that the data is in the system, we can report from it in any fashion we desire. We know in real time how we're performing on a project compared to the estimate. We know what operations we're high or low in (compared to the estimate). We know employee productivity, on a job, during a month, or over a year.
If you have a way to efficiently track, collect, and report on this type of data, it can be a real asset. Without a good system, it may be too much work to bother with.
I agree that first why are you wanting to track individual employee production, as mentioned there is software and hardware that can do that if you are already barcoding. Not cheap but it can give up to the minute production reports. If you are wanting to pit Bob against John then you need your butt kicked and kicked hard as that will destroy any team effort you have. Build teamwork, earn respect and production will rise. TEAMWORK.
