What kind of spray stain are you using?
Depending on what you're aiming for, you will likely need to add white colorant.

I feel your pain. I've had several grey jobs lately and it can be really tricky to get all of the underlying colors out of there. I've had good luck with Sherwin Williams. They have several standard greys, or they will do a custom match if you can take in a sample. Good luck.

We had a similar situation. The client wanted to match a maple door that was grey but had been finished with tinted lacquer. Well, apparently you can't use tinted lacquer in California and staining maple grey doesn't end up looking too good, just blotchy. We ended up coming across this Weatherwood stain that ages wood by reacting with the tannins. It turns most woods grey and some black. Long story short, it's kinda pricey but came out looking really good. Here's the link.

We used to mix all our own stains no problem , but when we came to a Grey stain we used UTC colorants and tried lamp black and the white Dichromium oxide. We got blue because the lamp black is made from soot which has a bluish tint , finally we added van Dyke brown color to kill the blue and we had grey.Good luck
