I have a bumper pull 18' box trailer that I load cabinets into for delivery. Loading the trailer has been a 2 man job for awhile because the cabinets are just heavy enough that I want a 2 man lift so that nobody gets hurt. For awhile we have been thinking about making a ramp so 1 guy can 2 wheel the cabinets in.
Do you guys use anything like that? I have a few large jobs coming up and I could use the saving in man hours anywhere I can get it. Plus if I can load myself after hours it's a lot cheaper for me.
We have a fork lift and a pallet jack to move it with. I was really hoping to make it light enough that 1 guy could move it hisself. Maybe wheels on one end so that when it gets lifted up the wheels hit the ground.
Any help is appreciated.

We have a cargo trailer with a ramp style door. We usually load with 2 guys, but I've been known to wheel cabinets up the ramp into the trailer and load by myself. You need big enough wheels on the cart to handle the ramp lip. It works, but there is the potential for the cabinet to get away from you going up the ramp. Recently, we've started using a local moving company for bigger jobs and only using the trailer for 1-5 cabinet jobs. They have the skills and resources to do it right, charge less per hour than I bill out, and we're fresh when we start the installation. No brainer for us.

That's an interesting thought. I do rent a truck with a lift gate for bigger jobs. I never thought about a moving company. Thanks for the idea.

What do you look for when hiring a moving company?

i go to their place of business & look at how they take care of it. needs to be clean & not junky. meet the movers & get a feel of how i think they will take care of my work.
also look at the moving trucks to see that they are clean & not beat up. after all they will be representing your work on the jobsite.
as the other poster said if they do all the lugging you can just step in fresh & get a ton of work done easier.

Are there many movers interested in smaller loads?

If they have a franchise called "2 Men and a Truck". I have used them moving personal items such as when the wife bought a dining table and hutch. I let them take the potential grief if it got damaged as I didn't want it.

For small lots, up to what will fit in a 24' truck we use a local delivery company. They will go up to 150 miles. Cheaper than we can rent a truck and do it. And we can keep our guys making stuff. Been doing it for years and never had a problem. We provide the furniture pads which they always bring back.
