widebelt tracking problem

9/1/16

I have searched the knowledge base and found no answer to my problem. I am going crazy on this one. We purchased a used widebelt sander, 37 x 75. The feed belt runs off to the left side of the machine. I have loosened to left side and tightened the right. It runs off to the left side. I have done the opposite, loosened the right and tightened the left. It still runs off the left. We just put new bushing on both the front and back rollers. Any help?

sounds like your tracking system is not working or is out of adjustment
most machines oscillate the belt using a tracking eye and a pneumatic cylinder.
take pressure of the belt and move the belt side to side. you should notice the head move side to side. the top of head.
normally the belt should move side to side every second.

Chris,
Thanks for the response. The sanding belt is doing just fine. The conveyor is the one that is running off to the left. I have been all over the table looking for a cause and can not figure it out.

sorry I misread post.
what brand machine do you have?
I have a SCMI.On front of machine i have 2 bolts which adjust tracking. These are attached to the front roller.
have you measured distance the roller moves when you make the adjustments?
did you see machine operate before you bought it?
hopefully you don't need to get a new belt as they are a pain to change.

The sander is an older model Halsty. I have attempted adjusting both sides of the roller with the bolts, one on the right side of the roller and the other on the left. No mater which one I tighten or loosen, the feed belt moves to the left. The feed belt does not look bad. I have found no information on this sander online. It does look somewhat like an older Timesaver.

Are you able to confirm visually that you have takeup left in the tracking adjuster or that the adjuster is in fact moving when you make your adjustments? If you move both and see no tracking changes in the belt I would wonder if there is something up in th adjuster itself. Either something is stripped, or run all the way out, or that the thread is so fine you may not be adjusting enough.

I would try putting a mag base dial indicator on the machine and indicate off the end of the adjusting roller and run your adjusting screw in and out to confirm that the roller is in fact moving. If it is then you likely just have to adjust far more than you have been. If not you now have to dig deeper.

Thanks Mark
This is pretty much a simple design. The adjustment bolts run through each end of the shaft and bottom out on a stop on the side of the table. I have about 1.5 inches one each end that I can adjust on the roller. I am beginning to wonder if the conveyor belt is so old that it is causing the problem. I don't if that is possible or not. I have leveled the bed, all four post and replaced all bushings on the in feed and out feed rollers. Again thanks for your response. Any help is always appreciated.

An update note.
I decided to call Safety Speed Cut for some advice. Turns out Halsty was Safety Speed Cut back in the day. Most all of the parts on my old dinosaur are still in use today on Timesavers. Thank you gentlemen for all your help.

Sounds like a crude solution but maybe try flipping the belt.

That might work Mark. But it was a bit of work to get the table out of the machine alone. I think I will just put a new one in. Hope to have it up and running next week.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
