drawer box pricing8/28
I recently had a job with about 15 drawers. It's been a couple years since I've ordered and was expecting them to be in the $25 to $30 range for melamine dowel, but they were in the low $50's. I ended up building them myself.
I guess I'm a little surprised. I'm not setup to build drawers, yet I can make them cheaper than outsourcing. Isn't the whole point of specialization to make a product cheaper than the cost for the average shop to make?
Not necessarily. If a shop is under tight deadline, outsourcing can eliminate overtime and late delivery penalties. In those cases, a quick delivery is good at nearly any price. Do they offer any special services at that price?
This wasn't a rush job.
What got me thinking about it was that I had recently built some shaker doors myself. I thought I could at least break even on them since I wasn't super busy. But I couldn't. Even shaker doors are better to outsource for me.
I would have thought the same to be true for drawer boxes, but it's not even close (at least for dowel and banded). My internal cost was about half of outsourcing. I'm surprised by that.
You need to find another supplier, those prices are way out of line for a supplier unless they were all tall and wide drawer boxes.
