Prefinished UVcoated drawer stock
9/8/18
Occasionally we use a UB coated ready made drawer stock. I never feel like the glue bond between pieces is good due to the slickness of the coating. I’ve tried to scuff sand it which probably helps but that always results in scratches in the finish than can be seen around the joint. Is there anything else others are doing to address this? We are but jointing glueing and nailing. Thanks for any input

Why not cut a shallow rabbit joint to expose unfinished wood , makes a nice looking drawer box actually.

Thanks D brown,, Might do that. We are so used to glueing and nailing them I hadn't considered that

I have built a lot of boxes that were just nailed together (no glue) with a 1/4" bottom in a dado and stapled at the back. These are harder to break than the dovetail boxes that we buy. We normally use 1 1/4" brads. We buy 99% of our boxes now but the ones we make are UV coated 1/2" ply and edge band the top and nail together. We are thinking about cutting a dado on the cnc and then pocket screwing from the front and back so that you don't see and nail holes. The dado would just be there to help locate the parts together.

I don’t make cabinet, but for my own house I pocket holed pine 1x6 together with a white Mel bottom.
People always tell me they look nice. The bottom takes most of the abuse anyways.

We only use prefinished plywood for all,our drawers and use 1/2” sides and bottoms with 3/4” front and backs. Only soft close full extension slides and our drawer is pocketholed. We have a foot operated pneumatic pocket hole machine which makes fast work of this job. No glue or dados and have never had a drawer break on us.
