Cad/Cam Software

Hello all,

I will be ordering up a CNC shortly and have yet to put a finger on which software to go with. We produce wood passage doors and want to do surface and edge machining. We are ordering a machine capable of machining lockset mortises, hinge prep, top/bottom prep for sweeps and any type of surface machining needed.
So far I have received a quote from Mastercam, like the looks of their program but not so much the price. Any thoughts on a cad cam that might suit our needs well? I'm not big on subscriptions but if it means not putting out 12k it might make sense. Im not sure if programs like Mosaic are capable of the work we need to do.

Mozaik would not be a good choice for what you want to do.

What kind of cnc are you purchasing? Most come with software that can do everything you're talking about. TPT, B-Solid, woodwop, Genesis, etc

I 2ND ALPHACAM VERY EASY TO USE & WOULD WORK GREAT FOR WHAT U R WANTING TO DO. BUT PRICEY AS WELL. & THEY WILL WANT U TO DO SERVICE PLAN BUT U DONT HAVE TO.

I would add a vote for Rhino and Rhinocam.No ongoing maintenance costs and it works brilliantly.Even the most basic of the CAM options will do just about anything you need on a three axis machine and the CAD/CAM package will cost a lot less than the alternatives.Both parts are available as demo downloads and the tutorials included with them will take you a very long way.Unlesss you have a very unusual CNC there is likely to be a post processor in there that will work.

Thanks for all the input, would Rhino/rhino cam be able to run a second horizontal spindle? I am looking at a machine that has a dedicated horizontal spindle as well so I don't have to run a bunch of aggregates.

I can't answer that but a quick email to Mecsoft might get you a good answer.I wouldn't be too surprised if it could handle the job but ask the experts.The top level module will deal with just about anything including 5 axis work.

I would probably take a look at Alphacam. I have posted code to machines thru Alphacam that had horizontal spindles. Pretty easy to set up workplanes, even on your 3-3.5° door bevels if doing hinge pockets. I have not used Mastercam, but I think the machining possibilities are similar. If you do end up using aggregates, the application of tool paths is fairly easy with good simulations to check your work before output. Good luck.

Daniel, I'm not sure what brand of machine you're looking to purchase but all the large players have software packages that machine doors. SCM, Stiles, Holz-Her, Biesse - IF those machines were not what you were looking at it might be worth a second look. Could save you a large software expense.
