What bit do you use?
3/17/15
I am looking into using edge banding on some of my products instead of t-mold. I notice that several people edge band just as the piece comes off of the router.
What style bit and/or brand of bit are you using to create a smooth surface that can be edge banded right away?
Thanks for your help.

3/8" diameter three flute mortise compression for 3/4" particle core. Have not used premill on our bander in over 12 years. Using both Vortex and Onsrud tools.

3/8" compression from Onsurd. Their Marathon bits are generally very long lived but they have had some problems with control batch to batch. They have always had great customer support. The Marathon bits have some sort of treatment that makes them last much longer especially if you run HPL. Even with cheaper compression bits we've never had a problem going directly to banding. Don't run dull bits and you will be fine. .018 will telegraph crappy core no matter how it is cut.

I will give those bits a try.
Are you cutting particle board, mdf or ply?
I am cutting import 3/4 birch ply prefinished. Will this still work?

We use a 12.7mm compression Diamond Tipped Bit from FS Toools made by FS Curing.

Samuel, Is that a single flute?

What rpm and feed rate are you running the diamond tooling?

Larry -- Yes it is a stagared single flute
Wil -- We run the tool at 18000 rpm and the feed rate depends on what material we are cutting for eg. Particle core with Melamine finish we run bettween 6000mm/m to 7000mm/m , Plywood and MDF we run at 8000mm/m.

If you're looking for a router bit I'd advise this: http://www.toolstoday.com/t-cnc-vector-pattern-contest.aspx
Quite an easy way to get the wanted tool.

HI.
I usually cut laminated MDF and plywood.
I use a 12 mm double straight diamond cutter.
I run it at 19000 rpm and 12000mm\min
I get very smooth edges and high yield.
