Educating folks on Feeds N Speeds?3/17
I just started at a new shop, and predictably the CNC operator is running the machine at very slow feeds. He says if he runs it too fast it wears out the tooling and improves the edge finish. We have a 1-year old Weeke that was spared no expense, so it can push any feed rate we throw at it.
Knowing the importance of proper chip loads, I'd like to educate the shop on the subject. Call it a pet peeve. I'm not in charge of the shop so I have to approach the idea from the right angle otherwise it will be simply ignored.
Use chipload to calculate speeds and feeds.
We're running a 3 flute compression spiral in 5/8 and 3/4 1 pass at 1100 IPM. Best edges and long tool life. When we slow the feed rate down, tool life suffers.
Call the tool maker and they will have a recommendation. Vortex will give you suggested RPM and feed rate as a starting point.
Onsrud has good videos on you tube that go through the math and all the Vortex suggestions are in their catalog. Gwizard is a good speed calculator as well, but it has a few more things to input.
If you have a smart phone you can download a copy of our free app. Just go to your app store and search Vortex
This is one of the biggest issues we face on a daily basis. We have a chip load chart in the front our catalog. The issue is there are so many other variables that play into the feed and speed you usually end up with a different feeds and speeds. The biggest thing is we are only a phone call away also.
