Dust collector on off switches

Currently I have 2-7.5hp dust collectors running the shop, 1 collector feeds the beam saw, standard table saw jointer and planer all of those machines are contained to one area of the shop. The second collector feeds the wide belt, bander, dovetailer, slider and several smaller bench tools. Everything is blast gated. The problem is the widebelt is 60' away from the motor starter, also the guys forget to start the collector when making a "few cuts." I'm looking for advise on what parts I may need to be able to run low voltage to switches located at multiple machine locations around the shop bypassing the 3ph motor starter. I talked to an electrician about this and the cost was several thousand dollars. I honestly think he just didn't want to do it. Any advise would be helpful

A typical remote control dust collector switch gives you two remotes. You can wire the power end of the remote starter to the magnetic coil on the DC starter (must match voltage (115 or 230). An electrician should be able to do this in a few minutes if your starter will accept this sort of connection. If not, you can find used starters on ebay.

We use remotes and 3 pole contactors from Fernbrook. The come together in a kit Model DK3303. You will still need your electrician to install. We have had ours for 10 years and no problems.

If you use a contactor to start your motor your can install a daisy chain of switches any were you want. I for one does not have three phase from the street so I use a converter that is wired to a time delay relay that turns on the dust collector. I have a number of switches in the shop

I was thinking about wiring in multiple switches too. Our shop is under 2000sf and I decided to go with the remote switches. Our main collector is wired 220v, and for under $100.00 we now have the receiver and two remotes placed in the most used work areas. Sometimes we have to walk 5' to switch on or off, but not 40', like we use to. I installed the thing in less than 30 minutes.

On second thought, the less expensive remote units are not rated for 7.5hp, I was thinking the heavier one was.

I have no idea what hp dust collector I have but I do know its 3 phase and stands about 16' tall and 6' wide. I had my electrician wire it at the breaker so that a "pico" remote control switch works throughout the shop. The picos are around $5 each and I have one velcro'd to almost every machine. 8 months in and they have never failed. I am toke that the picos are meant to control lights FYI

I've used pretty much all processes listed above except for pre-made systems of which there are a number out there from which to choose.

Of all that I've used my current system is the best. I have low voltage switches on most of my blast gates. Open the gate and the blower turns on. Some of these gates require manual opening and others have air activated solenoids installed that open the gate automatically when the motor starts.

The core of the system is wiring low voltage switches into the contactor START circuit. They are all in parallel so any one of them will turn on the system. If power goes off the system will not restart without resetting a plunge style ON switch located on the blower control box.

What type of low voltage switches? Is this system easy to install? Will they work on my current starter or will I need a new contactor? Thanks for the responses

Any type of switch that can be set up to close the contacts when your gate opens will work. It can be a magnetic switch like used on doors and windows in alarm systems, a roller/lever arm contact switch or anything else that will physically fit the situation. Go through McMaster-Carr or Grainger and look at various low voltage switch types. They are all relatively inexpensive.

You should be able to use your existing magnetic starter. It's been a number of years since I set it up so I'd have to look into how I wired the switches to the contactor start/stop circuit. The switches can be in parallel but the connection at the contactor is a little more complex. However it does need to be a contactor with a low voltage start/stop circuit as vs. a 120v or 240v start/stop coil. I'd have to review what I did before posting the info here.

What is the voltage of your contactor Coil ? low voltage or 120 line voltage ?
its all wired in a loop with make and break switches

I power the switch loop with 24 volts. The switches are in parallel or it wouldn't work with multiple switches.

Here is the wiring diagram for my system.

24 volt AC is rectified to 24 volt DC which is then sent to the blower gate switches.

I bought one of those Fernbrook systems, piece of junk. It won't turn on if my spray booth is running and it turns on some mornings all by it self, sometimes during the day as well. the radio frequency for this switch just has not been figured out or engineered correctly. A garage door opener works better than this does. I thought it would be so cool to have a switch at each machine, would be if it worked. As soon as I have time I am going to take it out and do something else.

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
