Safe finish for a bedroom walk in closet/wardrobe - ?5/5
Hi to All,
I’m planning to rebuild a walk in closet/wardrobe. I plan to build boxes out of 3/4 inch Birch plywood and attached rods/shelves and make drawers where needed. These boxes will be floor based and will be attached to the walls as well (sample picture attached).
I will attach oak banding over the open edges of plywood.
My question – Im trying to find the safest/no odor sealer coat (i do not plan to stain the plywood as i like the light color of birch) to protect it. I do not want to paint it. Also i would use the same sealer to finish the inside of the drawers. So the sealer coat needs to be odor free and safe for clothing and odorless given it will be in bedroom. Also should be easy to apply. I dont have a spray gun.
Few options i have found are water based finishes and shellac such as:
Im leaning towards general finishes waterborne acrylic finish.
Please help in choosing the right sealer!!!
Thanks a lot!!!
Why not just use pre finished maple or birch plywood ? They only charge about $15 a sheet extra for the finish and the stuff is bullet proof . I usually use a matching pvc banding so there's no need for any finishing .
another vote for prefinished maple or birch.
short of that, assuming you have the ability to spray, i'd use GF enduro clear poly, or sherwin williams kem-aqua plus and simply shoot a few coats of clear on. durable, no odor, dries fast, easy to apply.
Rubio Moncoat would be a good one to consider. It's non-toxic. It colors and finishes in one application, or it's also available in clear (Pure). It's also easy to maintain, easy to touch up (if you ever need to) and it looks great.
Hope this helps.
