correct primer under pigmented water based Lacquer?

I used a gray pigmented water based Lacquer to prime under white-based, pigmented white water based lacquer.
I'm using SW Kem Aqua.
I've used the product 6 times so far , always with a beautiful, opaque finish.
On this project, after 6 coats of white, I still have gray shadows.
I'm spraying with an Apollo hvlp rig that I really enjoy using.
And its only inside the cases. All the flatwork is opaque.
All the pieces are the same material.
Obviously, I've done, or am doing, something wrong.
I've used the product in the same way on previous jobs with great results.
None of the other projects were white top coats. They were darker colors.
I'd love to be schooled. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Use a white primer. They have a product called a WB surfacer. Use that and then one more coat of Kem Aqua.

Either your coats are very, very thin, you aren't getting a full coat or the lighting is playing tricks on you. 6 coats would either cover everything or nothing. Not sure how else you would get what you described.

Once again for clarity- you self primed with gray Kem Aqua and then you sprayed 6 coats of white Kem Aqua over that?

Can you post pictures?

i use shellac-based primer under the kem-aqua pigmented. you should need no more than two coats of the KA to achieve a good finish. FWIW, i find that warming the finish and substrate helps a great deal with KA.

good luck with your project!

Why would you use a darker color to prime under white?

I use flat white before I finish it with a colored lacquer.

Thanks everyone for the posts.
I'm headed back to SW for more material and I'll ask about the surfacer product.
I used the gray because I had over bought it on a kitchen that was all gray (don't ask me, that's what they wanted.)
It worked great on a green TV wall and a blue bench....but it is sucking on a white bookcase.
And I'll never do it again.
And I've never gotten good coverage with one or two coats of pigmented lacquer - am I being to scared of drips and runs and spraying too light? Speaking of light, my booth has flourescent lighting, and there's like 6 different shadows everywhere.
Suboptimal when doing a reflective coating.
The Kem Aqua does hold well to vertical surfaces, but I feel like it's better to apply another coat than sand mistakes off.
My bad, and I'm moving forward.

I have been spraying WB for nearly 20 years and Kem Aqua has some of the worst vertical sag resistance that I have seen.

Lots of better products that allow you to spray a much heavier coat without runs.

To Denny G - I'm using the SW product because of the solid color.
I usually use either a general finishes product or Hydrocote resisthane for clear coating.
I'd love to find a product like the Hydrocote with 60 g/l of voc's that I can tint a solid color. People seem to want colors right now.

Try the general finishes poly. They make that in white and can tint to any color. Hands down better product than Kem Aqua for spraying on site. Use their primer as well.

Since it's only inside the cases you might be getting too much blowback, where the coating is not getting into the corners.

You guys should try Valspar's Zenith line of paint. I used General for years but the price and shipping was getting out of hand. Zenith is cheaper and has higher solids. Sprays good also.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
