air bubbles with Kremlin pump

We have recently switched to a kremlin eos pump 15 c25 with an xcite gun using 06-132 Tip.
and we are getting lots of air bubbles on the laydown of the coating
We are using an ICA waterbourne lacquer
fluid pressure is 3.5 bar and gun air between 1.5 and 1.8
fluid is thinned to 5% with water and retarder d1072
it seems to be coming right at the lay down of the coat
I have checked the air to the gun and adjusted it between 1 bar and 2 bar with no difference
I have shut off air to the booth and ran a trial to see if its causing issues, this helps a little but the skin over is still happening with some bubbles left.
any help with this set up would be appreciated.

I don't do waterborne but it sounds like to much pressure on both sides.

I shoot with 35psi fluid and 16-18psi air.

For primers I boost it to 40psi fluid and go on the high end for the air.

I use an MVX gun with an 06-134 tip.

i have had the same issues with the same set up and i'm convinced it is the pump.

my graco pump just went down so i put this eos pump back into action as our clear pump. the bubbles seem to happen/been seen almost immediately. i'd say they are .25" on center, so everywhere. i've experimented with different air and fluid,
different thinners and retards, all to no avail. i've broken down the pump, changed tips, installed a new fluid line, and changed guns without any changes. i simply cannot get it to work with solvent-based poly.

i swapped the eos out for a 20:1 kremlin with older mvx guy and it sprays perfectly. i've also used the same material, just shot it from the eos and from a cat cup gun, and the cup gun stuff looks very nice (bubble city with the eos).

our local kremlin sales place wants to blame the poly guys. not much help there.

First off it sounds like your fluid pressure is high. It also sounds like a classic case of WB micro bubbling due to high pressure sheering of the WB product. This is my understanding of that process (please somebody correct me if I'm wrong); WB products have a high level of surfactant (soap) to aid in product flow and lessen surface tension. but when the product is forced through a small opening under pressure some foaming of the product takes place which get distributed in the line then released on your piece where some of the air bubbles flow to the top and pop leaving a crater and some flow to the top and skim over leaving a bubble. The smaller 10:1 & 12:1 pumps were especially prone to this (I have a old 10:1 Graco Falcon and a 12:1 Binks Comet 4/12 and they both micro bubble WB"s) The Kremlin EOS being a bigger pump was suppose to limit this problem. I started using pre-orifice tips and this helped a lot but didn't end the problem so I switched over to spraying WB's through low pressure fluid set-ups (pot/gun, diaphragm pump/gun, gravity gun) and have very good success since then.
That said I have read on this site of people having great success spraying wb's through a pump.

I spray Valspar Zenith & MLC aqualente with the Kremlin 10-14 and 09 tip. No micro-bubbles for me.

I also have a CAT gravity Jaguar gun and it sprays all types of Waterbornes with a 1.4 tip perfectly. Even better than the Kremlin. Go figure.

Forgot to add, '06' tip seems too small for spraying waterborne.....was this a recommendation from your dealer????

The set up we have at the moment was recommended from the dealer of the coatings
they have some pretty good info on the kremlin unit as it has been used hand in hand with the two companies ICA and Kremlin
just seems like I am getting something wrong there
We sprayed a pigmented coating from them and a second job with sealer with great results.
in fact I would say it was the best two finishes I have put on to my cabinets.

Dan we don not thin the AOB510 from ICA. the thinning seems to create problems. Just use it straight with or without catalyst. You may have to go mist coat and right away finish coat. Keep distance over 8" from gun to substrate.

Also 06 tip is too small. I use an 09-092

We have managed to fix our issue today with the help of our rep and have managed to achieve perfect results.
The Tip was recommended as the 06 is meant for the water borne finishes
rather than to much fluid pressure we had to little and were thinning the product.
We switched to spraying straight from the pail no thinning and this completely changed the finish.
After using a 4 stage turbine for two years with lots of issue getting good results this has shown up to be a real game changer for us.
Thanks for the comments and advice.

I would examine the final finish 'sheen' very closely and determine if you have not 'sheared' the coatings gloss level with an '06' tip. You would have to do a sample board to verify this potential problem.

Obviously this would be most noticeable at a 40 degree sheen and higher.

Hello Robert
can you explain what you mean by shear the gloss level ?

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
