Covering deep oak grain with waterbased finish

I am refinishing a solid oak table and chairs with waterbased products for a repeat customer. Originally I sprayed tinted waterbased lacquer over the existing polyurethane finish. The chairs, legs and skirt came out as requested, but the top didn't. In the end I stripped it (the top) and sealed with diluted wb lacquer then applied the tinted wb lacquer. Colour is a good match, but it didn't totally fill a lot of the pores. I would like to topcoat with a wb urethane or varnish, so am asking how to get it to soak down into the grain so it's sealed. The customer loves the look of the grain and wanted it to stay rather than grain fill it.
So do I dilute the first topcoat say 50% and see if it will drop down and seal? Do I try to apply a really wet undiluted coat and see if that will do the trick.
Original sealer was Valspar 7702 diluted about 30%, tinted coat is Valspar 7502 and for final coat I can go with either Target EM2000 or CSI Finishworks Urethane (260-20-G1 by Fuhr).
With hindsight I know I should have done this very differently, but I tried to do a good customer a favour and it is what it is right now, so no more redoes!!. So any help with the current problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Paul

Thanks Bob, I'll get some on Monday and try a light application as I need to have some grain definition.
I did have reasonable success with spraying very light coats of the Fuhr product, almost a dry spray. I found spraying across the grain gave me better results than with the grain. But I think the filler would be less work and this job has already become a charitable act!!

It seems that it's impossible to get the Aqua Coat in Canada in the winter as the main supplier will not ship due to risk of it freezing.
Makes sense but sure is frustrating

Was that from Aqua Coat Direct?

If the customer likes the unfilled look why fill it? As long as the finish has sealed the pores it will be fine. But if the finish is bridging around the pores that's a different story. I had some terrible results in that respect with TC's EM-9300 on white oak. I switched to GF's Exterior 450 and had no trouble at all. No idea, but maybe the products you are using are the root of the problem.

If you want to fill the grain, I've had very good results with Crystalac WB grain filler.

Bob, Lee Valley carries it here in Canada, but they won't ship to their stores in the winter. They have it in their central warehouse but that's an 8hr drive away in Ottawa. Aqua Coat has a note on their site that says they won't ship in "extreme" cold. I could order from AC but I'm concerned that any delays at the border could adversely affect the product (and my wallet). I will call Lee Valley and see if they will ship direct to me, but it will have to expedited delivery and that will cost more than the product.
Looking at all the scenarios I am leaning towards stripping it (again) and grain filling the bare wood, then finishing it. Time-wise I can have this done before the Aqua Coat would arrive and I already have all the products needed so it's the most cost effective option. Should have done this in the first place. Isn't hindsight wonderful?
I can pick up some Aqua Coat in the warmer weather.

John, the finish was not sealing and was bridging some of the pores. Looked great from a distance, not so good up close and I was concerned about problems in the future as this table will be used daily.

Paul, The product can go through 3 freeze thaw cycles with no problems. Tell Lee Valley to ship anyways and you will be fine.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
