Help with Stealth "streaks"

My finisher has been having an issue with the darker colored white base Stealth post cat from ML Campbell. She keeps having streaks light and dark show up it the finish.

Spraying through a CAT Pump 14:1 with .411 tip.

Are normal is 10%cat 25%Reducer 5% to 10% Flow Enhancer. Usually putting viscosity about 23sec.

We have tried everything we can think of adjusting air and fluid pump, new tip, not uses flow enhancer and retarder and nothing has worked.

Stealth clear base sprays fine and we can't see any streaks when spraying whites.

Has anyone had this issue

Any help would be great.

I recently had the same issue and tried every possible solution to correct. Our weather is about 85 degree with 51% humidity, we spray with a kremlin 10:14 pump. Stealth 275 ( calif ), 5% catalyst ,10% retarder and went to a 06-092 tip with a screen in it to break up solvents. have gun about 12" above surface and overlap by 50%. Fluid set to 50lbs. and air to 15lbs. Don't know if I got lucky because I've been spraying stealth for at least 2 years. This was on a dark grey door but have had it happen on a pure white color. Good luck.

Dark colors can be tough, one thing I've done a few times with reasonable success, is to do 2 coats of the color, let it dry, scuff it down pretty good, but avoid any burn through. Then do a coat of clear over it, it seems to clean it up pretty good and hide any of the streaking.

Clearcoat topcoat does indeed help.

My experience with darker conversion varnishes (including Stealth and Resistant, and a few SW lines) is that the streaks are just sheen tiger striping that you're already getting on your white paint, but it's not noticeable to the eye due to the white.

Basically the way to solve it, if spraying clearcoat isn't what you want to do (or if it doesn't fix it)---

Pay close attention to your air gun pattern. The Kremlin gun should have a little air pattern adjustment. Too tight, or too open, and you'll get streatks.

Increase the Flow Enhancer. In hot weather I've had to go as high as 20-25% flow enhancer, but you REALLY have to be cautious not to spray more than 2-3 wet mils, especially on vertical surfaces. I was not happy about having to do this because it slowed the curing down enough that it kinda forced me into longer curing times.

Ultimately we solved the problem by spraying a different product (KemVar+ from SW) which I never have to make a solvent cocktail for. Same reducer, all year, every day, the only variability is whether I thin it a lot, or a little.

Thank you all for info. More things to try..

When i use to spray my own cabinets, I used the stealth as color and KlearVar top coat method for years. Only because i could never get stealth to lay right and was the easiest way to get a nice finish steath.

My current finisher has been able to spray stealth with no issues for 3 years now without using a topcoat all different types of colors so i am at a loss to what has changed. Her spray technique is great
Spray pattern looks good..

She has even sprayed these same colors before with no problems. Maybe she has been just lucky up to this point with time of year, temp etc.

Sprayed out of our newest pump that we only use for clear with same results so hardware not the issue.

However we sprayed out of cup gun no streaks.. but horrible texture.

Today was 78 and humidity 58% so not that bad for Virginia

I just feel like i am missing something......

I ordered a smaller tip and we will try these suggestions.

Really don't want to go back to having to Topcoat.

Thanks

I think you have way to much thinner in the mix.

I've been running my concoction for quite some time now and have no issues with streaking.

I mix a large batch and put it into a can so I don't need to do any mixing of thinners until it's used up.

The mixture is 2 parts #2 Flow Enhancer and 3 parts reducer.

I will thin the paint mixture at 20% with the thinner mix. My most common tip I use in my Kremlin 10:14 is an 06-134. For large surfaces I use a 12-174 tip.

I always do a box coat on all coats. Make sure you don't have the gun to close to the surface which causes streaking.

I'm amazed with the guy using an 06-092 tip can spray C.V. through that orfice without throwing the gun across the room into a wall..... the tip would build up constantly blowing paint boogers onto the surface.... The spray pattern width is really narrow and your overlap the same.... the paint is coming out thin... your spraying a very narrow pattern and a low wet millage..... Recipe for streaking and trash in your finish unless your spraying something water thin and 4-6" wide trim.
and no one mentioned they have an agitator on their material supply... when you start reducing and retarding to the max your coating will fall out of suspension really fast..... without a good slow agitation you are asking for streaking as well.... My .02$

Shane, I am the one that suggested the 06-092 tip as was suggested to me to break up solvents by a Kremlin specialist. I only use the 10% retarder so as to give enough open time for the solvents to release before topcoat drying. I do not thin as we are spraying 275 voc, if we were having boogers on the tip I would than thin appropriately. This combination has taken care of our streaking at the present time.

Yeah, stealth 275 is ridiculously thin (probably due to acetone level)

It's 10-15 seconds Ford #4, which is comparable to a lot of dye stains.

Well started back up on that job and got through it today with ok results.

Add an agitator to our system, tough with the small batches that we do. but seemed to help.

Raised the fluild alot and lowered the air . Held gun 12" off work surface were able to get it lay ok- but no stripes!!!

Thanks for suggestions!

Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
