Need the pros help once again. You guys have never failed me. Im using CA techs air assist 14-1 pump. I am shooting Magna max white. for some reason other than being a rookie i just couldnt get a nice wet flow. Stupidly I kept going . Some spots look like sand paper while the other areas are decent but not good enough so I want to shoot the whole thing again but im afraid of build up. too many mils thick. How aggressive do I sand back this finish in order that i can recoat. Paper gets clogged quickly. I waited about three hrs after I painted. Suggestions and remedies I thinned Magnamax about 12% then added 2% retarder after that but it never worked I have Magnaclaw as a base coat

You probably don't want to go past 5 mils on magnamax. We spray the same thing with the same pump and don't have any issues. What size tip are you spraying with? Are your pressure and settings adjusted correctly? You could bump up the Flow Enhancer a little as well but really shouldn't have to.

sand back flat with 320-400 till all your orange peel is dealt with.... Reduce your coating up to 20% with reducer and add 5% of retarder.... what tips do you have to work with? a cat tip around 615 should be a sweet spot..... 30 psi fluid and 18-25 psi at the aircap should be the guns sweet spot as well

thabks guys i have a 513 tip and most likely im not adjusted correctly this drives me crazy. I guess flow enhancer is a different chemical altogether. I added thinner and retarder. I thought Magnaclaw was the culprit so i cleaned the filter and ran thinner throught the gun. I probably need a bigger tip for the primer also because Gun kept clogging.. I kept a rag with me soaked in thinner and kept wiping off tip and got through it pretty well..Nice and smooth

personally i like the 15 for the magna claw as i want a heavier build

also are you box coating the magnamax thinking that you are getting uneven film build, might want to get a wet film gauge to check

took me awhile to get used to box coating but find my film build is much more consistent, learned taht from the campbell rep but to each his owne

good luck

A 513 tip should be fine, I think you're dealing with a reduction/thinner issue.

Having sprayed a lot of Magnamax in years past, here's what I suggest, just for your own sake.

I've almost never gotten good results with Magnamax without using a lot of reducer and possibly some retarder.

Mix some that has intentionally too much reducer, and learn how to spray that on a few doors just to get the hang of spraying a light, wet coat that won't drip.

If the weather is reasonable (60s-80s) then I'd just start with 25-30% thinner, and just be aware that you may need to spray an additional coat for the build you want. But at least you'll be seeing what's possible regarding good flow.

Then drop your reducer amount in 5% steps until you start getting the desired results.

The #1 problem with spraying Magnamax (and, their post-cat Stealth and their primers) is trying to spray it too thick, and with too hot of a thinner.

thank you guys I really appreciate all your input. 72 yrs old and im still in school learning. ML Campbell rep came down and he tried everuthing with my rig and couldnt get it to atomoze correctly. Then he returned the next day with his equipment and everything was fine He had the same exact setup. He saud my gun was leaking air so he took top air controller out and found the fan controller was out of round and it looked like someone sanded it.. I have had troubles before with this unit so I sent it to Finish Systems repair guy to be rebuilt and this is the way I got it back. I have since called him and he denies sanding anything but is gonna send me a new part. We'll see. You guys are always such a good help and have gotten me out of some jambs before. Thank you

so here is how it gets out of round, when you put the fan controller back in, unscrew the fan so that it shows all the threads then screw it in, the tolerances are so close that if you don't and crank down on it, it is like a needle and seat it will score and also bend, also my kremlin fan controllers are notorious for this error with my guys, if you back the threads all the way you will be fine

good luck

Thanks Herb but i dont understand what you mean I unscrewed the fan or valve all the way out and removed it. When the new one comes i will take that u clip off thereby removing the fan control which is maybe 2"long by 1/4" wide and replace it with the new one. Then what just screw it back in right? Dont screw it in too far?

Does anyone else know what Herb Johnson meant when he was giving me advice on putting the fan controller back in the gun? I should be getting that part anyday and dont want to screw it up when i reinstall it

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.

  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
