General 3hp Dual Drum Sander9/25
I am at my wits end, the conveyor switch is not working and now the switch for the drums seems to not be working properly. So what I would appreciate is can I get a sense of what I propose as a solution will work - I am going to remove all the switches. I will attach a separate 20amp switch that will power the drums. For the conveyor motor, I was thinking of attaching one of the variable speed controls that you can buy separately for routers. Doing all the wiring I can do no problem, I just want to be sure this will work before I dump money on this. I have had too many projects start to go through the sander only to have the conveyor stop. Thanks for your help.
Not sure about the general but you may want to check to make sure your conveyor runs on an AC motor. Most I have ever seen run on a DC motor and if so your router speed control wont work. The main drums would seem nothing more than a switch or contactor.
Why don't you just change the switches? I bought a new one for the conveyor drive on Amazon for maybe $10 when mine failed; same 3hp General as yours.
Most router speed controllers work with AC/DC universal motors but are a far cry from an industrial speed control like a VFD which would give a more consistent speed. That said why not address the problem and trouble shoot the switches. If they're bad replace them with a higher quality switch.
