what wood is this?11/10
I'm building a cabinet to replace an old trash compactor, and need to make a door to match the existing cabinets. I suspect this is beech, but I'd like to get a second opinion before I order material.
Agree. It is butternut, and it is soft.
Looks like ash to me. Very common material in the early to mid 80's.
100% for sure, butternut.
Thanks for all the replies. My lumber distributor also confirmed this as butternut, but he doesn't stock any. He referred me to another shop that had a couple sticks, so I think I'm good to go.
Mark, the photo is misleading. It is just a conventional raised panel door.
Wow- Talk about the effects of light and shadow....
At a glance, my (admittedly older) eyes saw the panel as recessed, not raised.
....shoulda took the blue pill today.....
Could be walnut (they've been called country cousins:)
Looks like it has powder post beetle damage as well!
Rich, pretty sure the old growth Butternut did get wiped out by some kind of Blight so it may be suspect . the wood sort of looks like Pecan to me, maybe that's just a flavor ?
