Hi Gene,

I am hoping you can interpret these tree rings for me.

Why is the perimeter of these logs so much lighter in color than the center? I know this is the oldest part of the tree, but is the entire white part still alive or just the very outside ring?

What would explain the differences in color ratios between top center log and bottom center log?

The dark spot in top log is almost perfectly circular, the bottom one not so much. Does the irregularity of shape contribute at all to a difference in diameter of the individual straws?

What I am trying to get at here is how does the intrinsic shape of the tree manifest in coefficients of expansion for different parts of the tree?

I can understand that how the board is cut would have some influence on stability (relative to subsequent differential expansion) Does the intrinsic diameter of each straw also have influence?

Does the side of the tree that favors growth (side that faces sunshine or water) end up with bigger diameter straws or growth rings of straws?

Did you get permission from Woodworking Industry News to use their photograph?

If not you are probably in violation of several copyright laws.

I did not get permission to use this photo.
It simply did not occur to me.

I don't think Wood Industry News would terribly concerned about this. I doubt very much a woodworking industry newsletter would want to go after a woodworker about picture of wood in a woodworking forum supported by woodworkers. It wouldn't seem to be a big deal, would it?
